Anyway the Home machine appeared to fix itself after a couple of re-boots I spoke too soon -- it turns out I hadn't installed KB951748 on the Home machine. When I did, both machines behaved the same. Interesting that I could ping a site but couldn't get to the internet via browsers.

| reply to winchester73 SIMPLE SOLUTION!
I have tried the various suggestions here but none worked for me (except for reducing the zonealarm security setting which should NOT be tried except for emergency use).
The ONLY safe thing to do is to REMOVE the defective Windows Update component as follows:-
1) select "Start->Settings->Control Panel" 2) select "Add/Remove Programs" 3) select the 'check' box at the top of the screen that says "Show Updates" (there may be a pause for a minute or so) 4) scroll down the update list until you see the update that says "update for Windows XP KB951748" 5) Select the "KB951748" update and click on REMOVE
Now just reboot the PC and you're back to normal!
Probably best to wait a week or so for Microsoft to fix the bugs and then attempt another update then. Nothing bad is going to happen in the mean time, after all Windows XP has been around ages now and everyone already has a bazillion security patches installed.
Remember, every patch often adds another bug, which needs another patch and so on; it's generally best not to update until a few days after the patch is released and fully tested, unless of course you wish to be an unpaid 'beta-tester' for Mr Gates' software! ;--) |

@co.uk | reply to winchester73 A temporary work-round is to do a system restore to a day before the KB951748 update and then disable ms automatic updates. |

| reply to winchester73 I tried the complete uninstall and then fresh reinstall of ZASS and it did not work for me. The only fixes were the reduction of Internet Zone security setting to medium or the removal of the MS patch as previously mentioned. ZoneAlarm needs to fix their product as this new DNS vulnerability is not going away. |

@platinumgroup.ro | reply to winchester73 Yes, I have this problem as well. After Microsoft Windows Update installed today on July 9th, Zone Alarm Freeware version 70.473 blocks any web browsing with IE and Firefox and reading emails with Outlook Express.

| reply to winchester73 Thank you very much for this, i my internet died in the same way this morning and i thought as i'd just installed a microsoft hotfix that it most likely had something to do with it, would never have worked out that it was zone alarm conflicting with it tho. Much appreciated, Rob |

| reply to John McD Changing High to medium - it was my first solution. Now I set to high and in "custom" section "allow tcp on ports: 80, 443, 465, 995, 110, 25 - and it works. Ports are for : http, https, SMTP (ssl), POP (ssl), POP, SMTP It works. I don,t know the difference between high and medium level - but now I have high and wait for better solution. |

@verizon.net | I can confirm re-installing Zone Alarm on Windows XP SP3 does not fix the problem. I am using the medium setting for now.

| reply to winchester73 I use ZAF on dialup and really have no desire to lower any settings in ZAF to load this update. Until a fix is found from ZA, I do not plan to load KB951748.
I use the hphosts HOST file and as many others recommend when running a large HOSTS file, I have my DNS client service disabled. It's hard for me to see how my DNS can be poisoned if I don't have it running??? Am I understanding this situation wrong? |

said by hortnut :I was able to ping my wireless router, cable modem, various websites from a command window. I was unable to enter IP addresses direct into the address window of IE or Firefox. Ditto here. I reverted to a Restore Point from the day before and everything was back to normal.
I'll look into resetting the database for ZA once I get home, but sheesh... I hate when this sort of thing happens. I was cursing out Microsoft all night. -- Four gods wait on a windowsill, Where once eight gods did war and will. And if the gods themselves may die, What does that say for you and I? |
