| [XP Pro] XP won't start after updates.
My desktop just installed 2 security updates for XP. After installation it said I need to restart for them to work. It won't restart. I tried safe mode and going back to latest known good configuration. Nothing works. It gets to the BIOS splash screen and then says windows did not shut down properly. Then an endless loop of trying to restart. I didn't pay attention to the update numbers because I never has this happen before. Any ideas? I tried to do a repair from the recovery console but this desktop in 11 years old and I don't remember the password. I think I may be stuck on this one. |

Or you need some sort of boot CD maybe, to give you some further options. Got anything like that around? |

1 edit | Do do do do, do do do do.( A little twilight zone music if you would, please)
I shut down the puter last night. This morning I started it up to remove to the install cd I was using to try a repair install. I ejected the disc and went to get a glass of OJ. When I returned the screen that gives you start up options was staring at me. I thought I'd torture myself some more so I scrolled up to "last known good configuration," hit enter, and you guessed it, it booted up normally. Now if someone can come up with an explanation of what the heck happened since I tried that at least 5 times last night, please let me know. I think it's either gremlins or this box has gone over to the dark side. I did run chkdsk and all seems ok. Anyway, thanks to those who responded. Hopefully this is over.
Cundi, I did try to do a repair install but it wanted a password that I don't have or know. -- Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe. Albert Einstein |

You don't have to lower the security setting or uninstall the patch. -- 11,433 DEADLY TERROR ATTACKS SINCE 9/11~~SARAH BRIGHTMAN SYMPHONY WORLD TOUR |

| reply to crossedeyed No need to lower security with the updated ZA, the misleading workaround is to allow the affected user to access the internet if access was lost
