Yes. Setting ZA internet security to "medium" works. So does uninstalling KB951748 and leaving the ZA internet setting on "high". But either method creates some vulnerability. Which way is less risky? I really don't know. Another workaround might be to initialize the ZA "database" and let the ZA firewall reconfigure itself from scratch. See La Luna's post for a link to the instructions. Or simply uninstall/reinstall ZA - but this is a real pain. |

I uninstalled it via the Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, rebooted the computer and I had Internet access again. |

| reply to John McD Changing High to medium - it was my first solution. Now I set to high and in "custom" section "allow tcp on ports: 80, 443, 465, 995, 110, 25 - and it works. Ports are for : http, https, SMTP (ssl), POP (ssl), POP, SMTP It works. I don,t know the difference between high and medium level - but now I have high and wait for better solution. |

@verizon.net | I can confirm re-installing Zone Alarm on Windows XP SP3 does not fix the problem. I am using the medium setting for now.

@ntlworld.ie | reply to John McD Uninstalling and re-installing did not fix the issue even with the latest download from the zonealarm site.
The setting internet zone to medium does work however.
Have tested this on two different PCs |

The problem is with Zone Alarm. They are aware of the issue, and are working on it:

For ZA Free, there are two possible fixes: uninstall KB951748, or reset your internet security level to Medium in ZA. Neither is ideal. Uninstalling the update is preferable, but only just.
For those using ZA Pro, here's a suggested solution. IDK if it works, since I'm running ZA Free, but it's worth a try:
»Re: MS update KB951748 and ZoneAlarm --- PROBLEM
For the rest of us, you can always try Comodo Firewall instead:
Comodo is not tweaking over the expanded range of ports this update appears to implement.
For those folks suggesting you drop ZA and all other 3rd-party firewalls and rely on the Windows firewall, I suggest *you* go right ahead. Then call me to fix your computer when you get overrun by malware. Be sure to tell me how proud you are to have ditched those evil 3rd-party firewalls for the Windows Crayola version, so I can charge you extra for stupidity. |

| reply to John McD winchester73,
I tried reinstalling and this did not resolve. The only thing that worked was removing the Windows update in question.
As far as the guy with the router issue, I could be wrong but I doubt the update or ZA had anything to do with it. Try resetting it to factory defaults and reconfiguring. |

How will one know that it is good to reset the slider to "high" again, please?

| reply to John McD I tried setting the zone alarm to medium thinking it would re learn but it still cuts everything of including AVG update - at least it lets me know it is stopping things, but does not give me any options to allow, but the only way of getting on line - including letting Firefox go to the Zone alarm site for help - is to turn it off! Anybody know what the update does? I am now using the microsoft firewall but not sure it is doing anything! |
