| The switch from Rogers to Velcom - first impressions
Hi all, today was my first day testing with Velcom (Dry DSL). I'm on the residential 5Mbs plan. The modem provided is the briteport broadxent 8012-v. Apart from changing the max MTU to 1492 in the registry and in the router, the speed tests are OK. I've ran a couple of tests and I just cant make it past 3.7Mbs (with/without router):

I guess I've been spoiled with Rogers. The modem arrived with no instructions whatsoever. A separate email contained the PPoE ID/password. No worries, tech support was fantastic. Their support through email turnaround was surprisingly fast and knowledgeable. Overall, the money saved going from the Rogers Extreme plan, including the bandwidth over limit fee, will be significant. I'm also planning to return the modem to Velcom and go for the GNET TN516 THOMSON SPEEDTOUCH 516 ADSL2+. Tech support advised to monitor the speed over 2 days and get back to them with the results. In the meantime, are there any other tweaks/suggestions to try to improve overall speed? Other speedtests to try? Note: I've ran the trace and I am 1.5KM from the nearest CO.
Looking forward to your replies. |

| If you can try logging in to the modem, you can see what the modem is syncing at - speedtests show real world performance, but the modem knows what speed is actually being provided to it through DSL. Then you can narrow down the problem, hopefully.
Logins for different modems vary - Velcom might let you know how to login. |

| reply to McGusto I've been emailing with the Velcom HD and because the line was just installed, it would take a few business days before they are able to do a thorough check on my profile. I'm also curious to see if the line is interleaved or fastpath. |

| Post your traceroute here and we'll be able to know if the line is interleaved of fastpath.
If you don't know how: -Start, Run, type: cmd -type: tracert dslreports.com -Right click the mouse in the console, choose mark -Highlight the traceroute and press enter -Paste the result here. |

Will upgrading the modem to the TN516 vastly improve speed? This is about average of a few speedtests taken today:

has a low ping, if you were in interleave, that first hop's ping will probably be in the 40s ms. |

| Cool. Now to test for throttling. I understand all dsl companies throttle? When I was with Rogers, from what I could tell, as long as there were many seeds, i could easily go into the 400kbs steadily. To me, it didn't seem like there was any throttling. Any public torrents I can test with? |

| The DSL companies don't throttle (Velcom, Teksavvy, Acanac) but Bell does. So yes, unfortunately, all the companies that uses Bell equipments are throttled.
Test by downloading this Knoppix linux distro »torrent.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/stats.···3984a421 If from 4:30 PM to 2:30 am the download is at 30 KB/s... then you're throttled
Btw, what's your router? |

| argh... mid to low 30's on that torrent.
I'm using a linksys wrt54gs
I was reading up a bit on the tomato app, but haven't had time to really go through it. As a workaround to throttling, it sounds promising.
After posting this, I checked UTorrent and it was up at 80kbs...hmmm |

| Asking to know if your router supports the Tomato/MLPPP firmware.
It does: Linksys WRT54G v1-v4, WRT54GS v1-v4, WRT54GL v1.x, WRTSL54GS (no USB support) - Buffalo WHR-G54S, WHR-HP-G54, WZR-G54, WBR2-G54 - Asus WL500G Premium (no USB support)
So... when you feel ready... if you want to... you could upgrade your router to bypass the throttling. |

| This is definitely a chat room now
My router is the Linksys WRT54GS V1.1 and I've flashed it with the Tomato/MLPPP firmware. Right now, with MLPPP enabled, the torrents are not throttled with a speed of 430 KB/s and up (on popular torrents) every day (including from 4:30 PM to 2:00 AM).
Btw, flashing the routers means you're going to put a new program in it (it's like if your computer has windows and you reformat it with Linux). Meaning you'll have to familiarise with Tomato/MLPPP but it's a more powerful firmware.
So I suggest that you read about it before doing in it because I don't want to have a non functioning router but nevertheless, it's quite simple. |
