Guspaz : They're saying that in order to improve stability on your line, they've changed your sync profile from 5/800 to 4/800.

Previously, your modem was trying to sync at 5meg, but the line quality was such that the best it could do was slightly over 4meg. The problem is that on fastpath, having your modem sync as fast as it can go can causes reliability issues (disconnections and such).

Instead, to keep you on fastpath, they have set your profile to 4 megabit. This means that the modem won't try to sync any higher than 4 megabit, which gives you a bit of breathing room, and should increase stability.

I would also have suggested trying 5 megabit interleaved. Interleaved mode spreads out your data so that error correction is much more efficient, but does so at the cost of delaying your packets by about 30 milliseconds. However, if that extra one megabit per second isn't a big deal for you, you're not too bad off where you are.

Your speeds, in practice, should be ballpark 3500 down 640 up, plus or minus a few percent.

EDIT: Wups, forgot to explain the RCOs. I'll make it brief, since my battery is running out.

The 89% capacity down and 78% up (we call those your RCO, or Received Capacity Occupance) mean that of the maximum possible data that could be transferred through your phone line, you're using up 89% of the downstream capacity and 78% of the upstream capacity. Typically, you want these figures to be at most ~90%, to leave a bit of headroom in case of varying line conditions. Syncing at or close to 100% of your RCO means that the modem is using up all available capacity on the line, and that any increase in noise or interference will eat in to your actual data transfer. This means disconnections and dropped packets (packetloss).

With interleaved mode, the connection is far more tolerant of such errors, which is why I suggest 5 meg interleaved; you might get a few hundred kilobits per second out of the line, although you'll suffer from some extra latency (~30ms, if you're a gamer, this might matter to you).

I'd have suggested trying 5meg interleaved and just letting the modem sync as fast as it can; the extra reliability provided by interleaved should keep things stable despite maxing out your RCO. If you don't mind the extra ~30ms of latency, you might want to talk to Velcom about trying 5meg interleaved.

As far as Tomato/MLPPP goes, keep in mind that it won't improve your performance much over what you're getting now. I'm on the residential 5Mbs plan.
The modem provided is the briteport broadxent 8012-v.
Apart from changing the max MTU to 1492 in the registry and in the router, the speed tests are OK.
I've ran a couple of tests and I just cant make it past 3.7Mbs (with/without router):

I guess I've been spoiled with Rogers. Their support through email turnaround was surprisingly fast and knowledgeable.
Overall, the money saved going from the Rogers Extreme plan, including the bandwidth over limit fee, will be significant.
I'm also planning to return the modem to Velcom and go for the GNET TN516 THOMSON SPEEDTOUCH 516 ADSL2+.
Tech support advised to monitor the speed over 2 days and get back to them with the results.
In the meantime, are there any other tweaks/suggestions to try to improve overall speed?
