milnoc : Just so you all know, I've purchased a prepaid SIM from Fido. $35 just for the SIM card. What a monumental rip-off. But that's what you pay for being a citizen of a technologically primitive nation that fears innovation of any kind. If that weren't the case, the fate of the Avro Arrow alone would have been very different.

The Fido service is a TEMPORARY solution. As soon as I find a better service, preferably one comparable to the excellent service available in the UK by many providers, I jump ship immediately.

EDIT: I've just discovered a promotional credit of $20 was added to my prepaid account on top of the $20 I've already paid for. So the SIM cost me $15 instead of $35. It's still $15 too much for something that should have been offered for free though.

As far as mobile broadband is concerned, it's "hands off." The rate is 5 cents per kilobyte! That means only one megabyte of data transfers will cost you FIFTY BUCKS! And forget using one of their data plans! First, you have to be on a monthly plan. Second, it applies only to "authorized" handsets and applications. That means unlocked phones and Opera Mini browsers are charged the 5 cent/kilobyte rate.

And it's no better with Rogers who owns both Fido and the entire Canadian GSM network.

Pathetic.

milnoc : You did notice I meant calling from the UK to North America for only 8 cents per minute, did you? :)

Man, what a deal that was! In fact, it was even better! TalkMobile was running a promotion during September where all foreign calls on their World plan were only 2p per minute, or FOUR CENTS per minute! I called my family back home so many times, yet the balance was diminishing ever so slowly! And the SIM card was absolutely free! And no extortion "system access" or "911" fees whatsoever! I simply couldn't believe it!

Then I arrive in Paris, and the roaming charges kicked in. SCHLOOOOOOP!!! :D So I got a Virgin SIM for France. Once back in London, I bought the 6500 Slide with a £10 Orange card, which gave me a £70 reduction on the price of the phone, and gave me a great deal on data charges in return. It took a while to kill off that card. I then fell back on my TalkMobile SIM which I had topped off for the remainder of my trip when I bought the 6500.

So after my European trip, I now have two phones and three SIM cards. And none of the SIM cards cost me a penny. Unfortunately, I now have a dual-band European Nokia 1650 phone which is useless here in North America since the frequency band is incompatible. But it's no big loss since the phone only cost me £10 anyway.

Finding a SIM card in Canada is more difficult than I expected. Rogers charges $25 for their cards, and Fido charges $35. None of these cards includes any air time, so you're essentially paying a huge chunk of change for a piece of plastic and metal that costs maybe 5 cents to make. Major, MAJOR rip-off. I gotta find a way to make someone else pay for the thing...

Guspaz : GSM is the way to go for sure. The majority of phones available are GSM due to most of the world using GSM, and sometimes, when there are CDMA equivalents, they're crippled.
