Well,
Here's my 1st long-term "noise" curve. It was intended to last for a whole week but the application couldn't connect with the unit any longer past some time early this morning so i had to reboot it in order to make it work again - which is why i'm only publishing a two days record, unfortunately. |

| Hi DabberDan,
I tought a dip is where a curve drops but yes, it's visible indeed and i can even see another of those emerging at diner time so it's quite likely i still observe what i tagged the "Cooking Hour Syndrome"... For one who did read my thread from the begining it may seem like "The Monster" keeps wandering around as well, actually.

My testing conditions didn't change since last fall but i'm now ready to move the DSL unit to a shelf installed right behind my NID, about ten inches from it, on the opposite side of the wall: a ¼" hole is waiting for a short length of telephone cable to bridge that gap but i wish to collect a better defined curve 1st so i probably won't proceed with that displacement before next week. Once i'm done, that damn ugly mess which remained in a corner of my kitchen for months will be history, at last!

My only fear is that while the MoDem moves further from "The Monster" it will also get closer to the electric power panel so my fingers are crossed...

Hi everyone,
The testing configuration which i've used since last fall has changed significantly on June 8, 2009. Briefly put, all of my future "noise" curves won't compare readily with old ones...
Now, about the present post, wild temperature & humidity variations have returned with the last few weeks and i find that it shows as it was difficult to decide which samples i'd be able to average together. In the end, i created a set of three categories. These are corresponding to:
• Green - Quiet • Yellow - Normal • Purple - Noisy
As for my 2nd graphic, it simply averages them all together.

Now, the new stuff...
Here's what i've done to my phone-line wiring lately:

%20.JPG)
I didn't want to use iron tubes for shielding because of the heavy crasftsmanship this requires so i chose an easier alternative: air!

Then i drilled a hole into the brick-wall, right behind the NID, and i installed shelves on the ofther side, below an RJ-11 connector box, in order to benefit from my new WilCom POTS splitter to its full potential by locating the DSL unit as close as possible to the NID...
No need to mention that CAT-5 wiring would be pointless here!!!

I've been considering many experiments (like RF Choking, etc.) so the WAN-side setup went through a few changes but the "SNR" curves collected by 'RouterStats' so far appear to confirm that it was a rather good move to get closer, finally...

I almost forgot that one, looks like Europeans get better deals:

Noise daily records varied considerably.
Downward variations in my 4 days SNR Margin averaged curve remind me of this somewhat:

One year later (or so)...
I moved my DSL device to a shelf located right behind the NID and installed a POTS Splitter...
I used Stand-Off Cable Supports to move Bell's drop-line away from the house's PVC electrical power conduits.
I "tweaked" and added RF Chokes but, no matter what i done, it seems Bell keeps reclaiming every parcel of room i manage to free for myself when i look back at my 1st days here:
