The CRTC is not even close to the definition of a HEAVY REGULATORY ENVIRONMENT, while the FCC is just a sad excuse for any sort of regulatory body. The CRTC had allowed Robbers to swallow up Fido back in 2004 and they and the Can government at the time are the one to blame for the years of Robbers RAPE that followed.
I am still surprised the Robers caved in on this one and i will prolly byte and get the iPhone with the 30$ 6GB addon to my existing grandfathers Fido 2 Fido plan.

If there was SOMETHING else out there besides Robers, trust me, there wouldn't have been such a big brouhaha about this. The problem is : we have nowhere else to go. The only choice is Robbers/Rape.

I am surprised as well... typically those that will be purchasing an iPhone will be getting it as soon as it comes out.
The CRTC isn't all that heavy handed, and is just slightly more regulatory than the FCC. There's little competition in Canada, because the Canadian market is approaching saturation, and its 1/10th the size of the U.S. market.
The thing that kills me on Canadian wireless is having to pay for long distance on a cell phone.
If ANY carrier wants to break into the Canadian wireless market, deploy an IP based / VoIP wireless solution.
Paying +$6/month for SAF, having to pay for LD... come on - LD is pracically free these days.

Last time I checked, the CRTC has no authority over wireless companies. The CRTC doesn't even handle the spectrum licensing, Industry Canada does. Wireless in Canada is, for the most part, completely deregulated.

The foreign telecom ownership rules imposed by the Canadian government has really stopped any significant new competition in the Canadian market.
It has been recommended for years (by several groups and studies) that relaxing this restriction would enable more entrants in the mobile market.
Also, when the Canadian government allowed the sale of Fido to Rogers that eliminated any real national competition for GSM. That sale should not have been allowed to go through. |

Why. Fido and it's parent company were pretty close to going under. If the sale hadn't gone through, you'd still have the same players eventually. |
