[Vista] Wakes at 6:06 AM every morning

I recently assembled a new Vista box using parts from an older with the intention of using it as a HTPC. The main problem I have with it now is with how it sleeps. Every morning, Vista wakes up from sleep at 6:06AM on the dot and just sits there idling away into nothingness. This is a fresh install with no additional third-party programs installed beyond Windows Updates and drivers.

This is what I've done so far to try and curb the activity. I've disabled all USB devices (keyboard/mouse/IR receiver) from waking the computer and have disabled the wake on LAN feature from the Device Manager. I've disabled nearly every single task (including hidden ones) from the Task Scheduler. Automatic Windows Update and Windows Defender has been completely disabled, as well as scheduled runs of Disk Defragmenter. All unnecessary services have been disabled. I checked the BIOS as well and all "Wake On" features have been disabled. The BIOS has been updated to the latest version (1.D), which was the last version that MSI had for it.

The event viewer has given me little as most activities there are just related to Vista waking up and renewing the DHCP. I ran from the command prompt "powercfg -lastwake" and the only thing it told me about the device waking my computer is "Timer Expired (RTC)". Anyone know what this means? I have no idea where such a timer would be since I've torn through my BIOS several times. This has been driving me nuts over the past couple weeks and I don't have any clue as to why this is happening.

does it have an inbuilt network card which kicks in? If the comp is not connected to the net does it still wake up?

Yeah it's using the built in nForce Ethernet controller but I have disabled all wake options for it.

I'll try disconnecting to see what happens tomorrow morning. Been experimenting with different settings all week.

Another person that apparently had the same type of issue - »forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/Sho···iteID=17

You might try the "powercfg –devicequery wake_armed" command suggested there to see if there are any other devices that could be related.

In that post, they ended up doing a complete reinstall of windows to resolve the issue, but they suggest towards the end that it might relate to an HP USB TV Tuner, might be worth a look if you have one or something similar.

I saw that thread and tried the "powercfg -devicequery wake_armed" command and it showed nothing.

This happened earlier last month where my computer would always wake at 4AM. I reformatted Sunday and now it wakes every morning at 6AM.

I do have a pair of Hauppauge TV tuners in the system but I don't think they're the cause. I don't believe they have wake capabilities and the same issue doesn't appear on an XP MCE box I also have, which has a Hauppague TV tuner.

RTC generally refers to the "Real Time Clock" or the BIOS internal clock.

There's someone else on the Asus forums who has the same problem: »vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=···ge=en-us

That was a month ago, you might want to PM him or bump the thread to see if he found a solution. There's another thread on vistaheads about the same issue with other suggested remedies: »www.vistaheads.com/forums/window···eep.html

If all else fails call Microsoft, they may have an unpublished hotfix for similar problems.

I guess I'll try defragmenting and do chkdsk, as that was suggested as a possible solution. I'll also clear my CMOS and see if that helps any to solve this and report back tomorrow morning.

Call MS? That I'll probably have to set aside a day for.

Just to let everyone know, clearing the CMOS did not work. Same problem again this morning. Now I'm going for the defrag/chkdsk and will try disconnecting the LAN cable overnight. I'll also be asking this question in the MSI board and see if anyone in there knows anything.

I noticed in my BIOS, there's a wake on RTC option but that's never been enabled.

I'll give it a shot, though I already disabled mcupdate in the Task Scheduler.

I thought the guide checks every week at user login, not every day. That was the behavior I saw on XP MCE at least.

I checked the BIOS as well and all "Wake On" features have been disabled. The BIOS has been updated to the latest version (1.D), which was the last version that MSI had for it.

While in the BIOS setup did you see an option "Resume on RTC alarm" such as the following:

»global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func···id_page=

If so, make sure that option is "disabled".

The "Resume on RTC alarm" may be located under the Power Management tab and may go by a different name but should refer to wake or resume by Real Time Clock (RTC) alarm.

Are those tuners USB? It very well could be something with Media Center trying to update. A lot of cable companies push update over the network early in the morning as well.

Guide updates on VMC definitely occur more than once a week and not just at user login; at least, that's what I've noticed on mine.

None of the tuners I have are USB...both are PCI/PCI Express (Hauppauge HVR-1250 and HVR-1600)

I wonder if there's a registry hack to change the guide update frequency because the link above only showed a way to change the time it occurs, not the frequency.

By golly I think you're right. Looked in the event viewer again and found that the EPG was set to download every morning at 6:06AM and it changed to 1:06AM after my CMOS reset.

I changed the settings in Media Center so the guide won't update automatically. I can deal with manually updating the guide myself every now and then.

I'll let you know tomorrow morning if it worked.

Yup it worked...my computer doesn't wake at 1:06AM or 6:06AM anymore. Thanks for the help everyone.

Now onto why Vista won't sleep automatically...

Glad that worked.
As for the sleep issue... not sure I have anything for you on that one. I have built all my PC's since 1998, and I have never been able to get that to work... Well, It sort of works in that the PC goes to sleep... but I can never get them to wake up.

I just leave it on 24/7. Besides that, I use it as my home "server" anyway.

I'll probably just have to remember to manually put it to sleep after recordings and such. I know XP MCE had a feature where it could wake for a recording and then go back to sleep automatically, without waiting for the default timer to run out. This feature seems like it was either removed or not functioning in Vista.

Trying to get my computers to get as much sleep as possible now since ConEd just hiked electric rates by a whopping 25%.
