I was mistaken. It's the 3.5" chassis that doesn't position the SATA connectors in the proper location. The big ass (cosmetic) heatsink is really just a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter and has some weird adapter built in so it works with standard SATA.

If you can plug a SATA cable in, there's no reason it wouldn't work though. SATA is SATA is SATA. how much airflow do you think is going over the harddrive that costs around $300 inside that ps3 ?

It does not. A 10,000 RPM drive would add heat, make the fan louder and games less enjoyable, but wouldn't add to game performance in my experience.

The only thing a faster drive seems to do is slightly increase installation times. This is a very very small percentage of use. I'd suggest getting a low power 250 GB drive if you can, they run about $100 and are what I'll install on my 2nd PS3 whenever I'm motivated to do it. Installation of a laptop SATA drive on a PS3 is trivial. However, I suggest watching a video or two on youtube just to make certain there is nothing not completely understood. Some real time installations seem to take only a couple of minutes.

I don't think you would. It would be needlessly loud and hot, and you wouldn't see a big improvement while gaming. I never notice my 5400 RPM drive in my PS3 being accessed now.
