If you can plug a SATA cable in, there's no reason it wouldn't work though. SATA is SATA is SATA. The only thing a faster drive seems to do is slightly increase installation times. This is a very very small percentage of use. I'd suggest getting a low power 250 GB drive if you can, they run about $100 and are what I'll install on my 2nd PS3 whenever I'm motivated to do it. Installation of a laptop SATA drive on a PS3 is trivial. However, I suggest watching a video or two on youtube just to make certain there is nothing not completely understood. Some real time installations seem to take only a couple of minutes.

I don't think you would. It would be needlessly loud and hot, and you wouldn't see a big improvement while gaming. I never notice my 5400 RPM drive in my PS3 being accessed now.
