Thats incorrect. Now that they have finally shut down their last few TDMA sites, you can get EDGE data anywhere in the country (that ATT services of course).

Re: Huh?

No you can't sign up for the CHEAPER EDGE only data plan... that's what I meant.

Re: Huh?

Thats not entirely true. If you have an older phone (even an older iphone) with the unlimited EDGE plan you can simply swap out your SIM. The real question is, why would you buy the new iphone if not to take advantage of 3g?

Re: Huh?

Has that been tested? Because iPhones are actually quite picky about what SIM is inside of them. Even swapping SIMs between my iPhone and my wife's iPhone (so we could keep our numbers but swap capacities) I had to re-activate both of them through iTunes... additinoally you'd have to buy one of the no-contract iPhone 3Gs for like $500-600 to do that because if you buy the iPhone 3G at the discounted price you need to sign a 2 year contract and upgrade to the new 3G data plan.

Re: Huh?

I have never heard of anyone having issues swapping ATT sims between iphones. I would agree that you would need to buy one of the no contract iphones however, unless of course you found a used one available online.

Re: Huh?

I'm not kidding, both of the phones had to be re-activated when I swapped the SIMs out. I was not expecting that, but at least I wasn't changed any bogus fees for doing so.

The cost of buying the out-of-contract iPhone to avoid having to pay for the 3G data plan would way more than offset the savings of the higher monthly charges... so really the point is you can't buy an iPhone tomorrow if you live in a non-3G area and not get boned. I just saw that where I live isn't 3G... and isn't even close to anywhere 3G either! I am GLAD I wasn't seriously considering upgrading tomorrow!

I have never experienced anything like that, and I have used US SIMs in phones all around the world (and the other way around as well). I supposed ATT could have put some strange software lock in their iphones, but this is the first I have heard of such a statement.

If you were buying a iPhone or other 3G phone, the ATT people would have no problem giving you a 3G sim. I went from a EDGE phone to a 3G phone (I'm not smug enough and didn't have the $30 required data plan to qualify for a upgrade to an iPhone) and I had to change my old sim for a new one to get HSDPA speeds on the phone.. Though I have heard of people just going in to swap sims (and you need a 3G sim for HSDPA connectivity, I understand) the sim and the IMEI from the phone (whatever kind it is) have to be linked by ATT to give you service.

Having used GSM phones for well over a decade, I have never heard of a different type of SIM being needed to access 3G. Its the radio in the phone that accesses the network, not the SIM. Now I have no experience with the iPhone personally, but unless they are using a revolutionary new technology a SIM is a SIM and will work in any phone (locked phones not being applicable of course).

Re: Huh?

I just went from a Siemens phone to a SE phone. The Siemens was EDGE and the SE is 3G. My old card was a 64K card. They made me change sims. The new card has 3G configuration options on it, there is a option in the phone to 'load configuration' from it. But I suspect that it's only the predefined networking passwords, etc.

however, a quick search turned this up: »wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Carriers/ATT it seems some sim cards won't work or have limted functions.

I have a 'blazing fireball 3G' now.

(I've also had ATT prior to Cingular's purchase when they just started issuing sims...and phones like the dual TDMA/GSM S46 were popular.)

Slightly off topic...but this is unbelievable. To use a phone, you have "activate" it through a music software.

Instead of other non-Apple phones where you just buy the phone and slap your SIM right in.
