3g coverage sucks.

ATT doesn't plan on anyone using it while on the highway. If you go up I95 and start in Jacksonville, you won't hit another 3g area until Columbia,SC.

Re: 3g coverage sucks.

So?

I would hope that no one is trying to use the 3G while driving. The only thing that occurs to me is possibly navigation systems and downloading maps in real-time. However, that won't work because of the 5GB. You instead have to pre-load the maps before travelling, and hope the maps are new enough.

Another thing is the rural areas in-between and how they're being left behind.

I'm not sure if the Iphone has Xm radio or not built in. I have a At&t Tilt myself. Using XM on the edge network is pretty much impossible because it doesn't offer enough bandwidth to stream it fast enough.

I don't have 3G in my area and probably won't until every other city has it first.

People want solid 3G coverage going down the road for things other than surfing the web. I agree surfing the web wouldn't be a bright idea. The whole idea of a smartphone is to make a device have more functions so you don't need as much crap. I've got a Gps, Mp3 player, Digital Camera, Phone, TV viewer etc etc all built into one device.

If there were no holes and 3G was solid I would probably have XM through my phone as well. Gps doesn't really need 3G, edge seems to refresh the maps pretty fast unless your driving extremely fast trying to use satellite imagery.

Also edge isn't fast enough to stream Mobi Tv. When I had the trial it worked great when connected to my Wifi but edge could only stream maybe 5 seconds at a time. Wouldn't it be nice to give your cell to your kid going down the road and let him watch TV to keep him occupied? Until there is solid 3g coverage forget that as well. Just curious does the Iphone even offer that or just simple web streaming like youtube?

Ouch, that is a bad coverage map.

I can travel from Houston to Dallas (5 hour trip) and listen to music streaming from my computer from home on my Voyager. I see NO gaps in EVDO coverage for Verizon, even out in the middle of Nowhere, Texas.

I took a Greyhound Bus once too, tethered my Voyager to my laptop and streamed movies from my home PC to my EEE in great quality cause of the availability of EVDO

I-95 doesn't go near Columbia, SC.
It would actually be Richmond, VA that's the next city on 95.

updated map FYI.

Savannah, GA has been active for about a week or 2.

But...yes 3G coverage does suck IMHO.
