and i dont see the point in anyone forking out $600 for the phone alone, because if you get the 6 gigs data plan by month end you are still on the hook for 3 yrs, so in that case its better to get the phone from rogers (cheaper)

the only reason will be "reasonable" to pay for the iphone ($600-700) if you dont get the data plan which mean you wont be on a 3 yr plan, just pegged to your voice plan contract

am i missing something here?

Yup, that's right too. The reason the echoing is worse is because with CDMA you're working off multiple towers at once. If there is any sort of delay or multipath with just one of the towers, the system gets confused and doesn't know what to do.

You'd be amazed. I have been shocked to find out how much analog is still out there. Especially in remote areas where there is no landline option, and there's this analog bag phone sitting in the corner. And the problem is, that creaky old bag phone is a phone and fax line connecting some remote job site to civilization. Without that phone, the job site can't legally be open for business. There's thousands of them out there between Bell and Telus. Thousands. Quite remarkable really.

Strange, I seem to remember Telus forcing a friend of mine who had the original ClearNET phone, the Sony/Qualcomm one, to change his phone at some point after Telus bought them out.
Telus did kind of underhandedly force all of the Sony phones off the network, but that was when they got into the roaming agreement with Bell for 800MHz CDMA and AMPS. They never offered a PRL update on the phones, so you were stuck with 1900MHz digital only as Telus no longer roamed on Rogers AMPS. It was by no means mandatory, you just had absolutely craptastic service if you stuck with the Sony brick phone.
Oh, maybe that was it... I thought it was something that rendered the phone useless... But yeah, having no analog fallback in those days sucked, as Digital 1900 coverage was spotty anywhere outside of populated areas...

It's not BS. Bell has been talking about moving to UMTS/HSPA since 2006. They will not be building a TDMA air interface GSM network, only a WCDMA air interface UMTS/HSPA network. This is the first time I've heard of Telus making the move, however. Verizon in the US is making similar plans. Just because you've been out of the loop doesn't mean that it's bullshit. :D

Oh, and AMPS is plain ol' analog.

This isn't also the first time Bell has changed technology, either. They were originally an IS-56 "TDMA" provider before they switched to IS-96 "CDMA"

This article makes no sense to me at all. First off,' 3G' is this practically interchangeable term between GSM and CDMA which basically means "broadband speed/like connection". Yet, the article implies Bell and Telus are moving over to GSM and will have to support 2 platforms.

I don't think so.

EVDO is already considered to be 3G, and is deployed over most of the footprint. Unless the article means EVDO-RevB, then I don't know what its talking about. Saying Bellus is converting to 3G doesn't give us enough information to work with. There are too many flavours of 3G.

If Bell were moving over to GSM, it would be the best kept secret in the history of the world in a company which can't keep secrets very well.

Yeah, nothing happened because Telus and Clearnet were both CDMA providers.

In the case of Rogers' transition to GSM, they ran their TDMA network for 7-8 years after GSM was up and rolling. They also shut down their AMPS network at the same time they shut down TDMA. I would expect Bell to continue running their CDMA network for a similar period of time, though I expect their AMPS network to be shut down a whole lot sooner - as in the next year or so.

not old at all...900 and 1800 are used in Europe and other parts of the world...850 and 1900 are used in Canada and USA...most newer phones are actually quad band (850/900/1800/1900) so they can truly support global service.

There's a difference between a "casual" user and a user of voice wireless services who a) doesn't want the hassle of a prepaid plan, b) sometimes requires U.S. roaming -- don't know if these basic prepaid things do that, c) sometimes requires the use of analog services in remote areas, and d) sometimes racks up a huge amount of airtime. I don't think I'd be well served by the 7-11 kind of plan which really seems geared more to the teenager who chats with the girlfriend.
