 Speedtest Issues

I think I figured out why I'm getting such poor speeds off of the DSL Reports speed tests. They only test up to 8.8Mbps.But I have 11Mbps DSL service.

The only DSL Reports speed test that gives a fairly accurate reading is this speed test. Which tests up to 11.7Mbps.

Actually, you're seeing the difference between near and far tests. The Hawaiian test, for instance, will show me a far worse result compared to NY Speakeasy: 1608/1408 for your favorite, vs. 14216 /1534 to NY.

Speed tests and HI seem to go hand in hand.
Nothing else to do?

The ones I have been using are strictly located on the West Coast. In other words your argument would hold water if I was using a site on east coast. Which is not the case.

Your argument posted in that thread would've held water if I didn't get those high speeds on the sites I cited in the attachment. I've also posted evidence that the DSL Reports speedtests that I've used are capped at 8.8Mbps. Hence why I am getting poor
results with them.

Actually I'm working with HawTel in improving their DSL service.I'm just pointing out the speed tests here I've used are not showing accurate results for Hawaii Internet users
with 11Mbps service and higher.

That argument holds no water since tmpchaos See Profile gets well over 10 Mbit on DSLR speed tests. Keep working with your ISP I'd love to see what they say.

As do many others. What I was attempting to illustrate is the comparison of a local vs. distant test. Konaguy... just as an experiment, try the NYC test and see what you get.

It would be more believable if two conditions did not exist:

1. Why can get excellent speed test results from sites listed in that attachment I posted.

2.Why when I do the speed tests on here that it stops testing at 8.8Mbps ?

I already I know what I'll get-crappy speeds due the distance factor. In my speed test matrix, I included a speed test in Chicago. I get 6.6Mbps there. Which is actually pretty good. But I get way less from DSL Reports speed tests located on the West Coast. To me something is wrong here.

The 8.8'Mbps' you cite is actually only the file size being provided, not related to the speed at all. Note that it reads 'receiving 8.8 megabytes', not 'receiving at xxx/per unit of time'.

One of the other factors to consider is how heavily a particular speed test server is used. I have a particular favorite server, which is fairly far away. It gives me a good consistent result because it isn't as popular. On the other hand, I have severe issues with a test that's quite close (nac.net). No matter what I do, I get very poor results from it- despite it being less than 20 miles away.

1. I think tmpchaos See Profile said it best.

2. 8.8 MB is the size of the download the test is using.

Well all I know is something is amiss here. Especially when I can only get a max of 5.4Mbps of any of DSL Reports speed tests.Bear in mind I only use West Coast servers here.

In my own tests I posted above, I get 7-9Mbps to the West Coast. I've also tried speedtest.net and Speakeasy's sites. Generally I get the same results.

I don't know how to better explain this problem ? Its certainly not the fault of my ISP.

Not really you're just seeing a problem where there isn't one.

I usually get very near my cap on OOL speed test in NY and I am in Hawaii on the same island as Konaguy. My cap is 5ms, much lower than Konaguy's, so I can't speak to whether or not dslr caps the speed tests at a particular speed or not. However, I can say I stopped using all java tests here (I don't have Flash Player so I have never done those) several years ago when the speeds got really pathetic. It was about the time Speakeasy ruined their tests by going to Flash which is a horrible test.

It all has to do with the routing and the routing to the West Coast dslr tests changed a couple or so years ago from ATDN to L3 for Hawaii Road Runner users. L3 is crap compared to ATDN for Hawaii users. The OOL test is FTP so I get very near my cap even though it is in NY. I usually do it in afternoon or lat night/early morning HST.

I get 4.92 on VisualWare's MySpeed in all three California locations. I get 1.5- 2.6 or so on Speakeasy tests on the West Coast and forget LinkLine and Megapath as they are even worse. I don't know why konaguy persists with the bad dslr tests. MySpeed web (or from the downloaded program using socket to socket) is the best test out there. Second best are the Web100 tests (because of the tremendous amount of information given the user) with which I also usually get really good results on those on the West Coast. Actually, the best speed test of all is OOL's FTP test.

All of this is sort of moot though as when SpeedBoost gets to Hawaii RR all speed tests (except OOL's) will be rendered totally inaccurate and useless like is being discussed in the RR forum right now where Speedboost has already been introduced. That is not to say though that the speedtests will be inaccurate for konaguy on DSL unless HawTel brings some of kind speed boost to Hawaii.

That's what I meant by not knowing how to better explain this problem. Why do I get crappy speeds off of all the DSL Reports West Coast servers. When I get great speeds off the sites I mentioned originally in this posting. Its not a distance issue. The sites I'm getting great speeds off of are located on the West Coast (Except one in Chicago).
