Dish or Directv - neither provide value for the dollar
I had DirecTV HD and switched to Dish HD and now am on DirecTV with standard service. Dish provided more control over the programming and actually provides better packages with HD. I just decided there was not enough content where HD provided a tangible benefit (and I have a 52" 1080p TV) for viewing.
Without competition I hate to think how miserable the service would be - thinking of the cable monopolies in the communities they operate. The local cable provider in my area does not even provide digital content much less Internet access.
What is unfortunate is that the companies providing content on the channels have been actively moving to reduce their costs to do so. I see channels like A&E that broadcast 2 programs alternately during the 5-11:59 p.m. time slot so for the 7 hour block there are not 5-7 program choices but 2 and these are usually repeated every week.
I checked and with my premium Directv setup I actually watch only 22 of the channels at all during the course of the year. And of the 22 channels, many have "paid programming" for more that 1/3 of the day, so I am paying extra to be able to watch hour long commercials, or even worse "reality" TV.
When my Directv contract ends I am dismantling the dish and getting whatever entertainment content from the Internet and Netflix. I already get all my news content from the Internet where I can get information not heavily censored or just plain made up by the extremists of the right wing corporate owned media.
reply to stenman I agree whole-heartedly with your post... especially about the Right Wing biased news media that is so "clever" has even tried to present itself as being Left Wing! Not surprisingly, some people fall for it (some believe everything they read or hear). How many Americans would support the war in Iraq if there were photos of injured or killed soldiers every day in our "unbiased" newspapers and television news programs?
