DSL initial setup (switch fr cable)

I'm a convert fr cable (they did a cap on data use that became expensive very fast).

I just got my intro kit and had a few questions about installation. My setup with cable was done without having to use or install any isp software (or crapware). However, many of the ATT/Yahoo DSL installations I've done work on have been loaded up with junk that came from the initial DSL setup.

Question: is there any way to do a setup without using any of stuff on the CD they sent?

Question: will I be able to keep the current configuration of my router (Linksys WRT54GL)? I have read somewhere that a router has to be configuted as PPPoE with DSL. With cable, the router was set to "Automatic Configuration - DHCP" connection type.

Yes; there's no need at all to use the CD that comes with the kit, and lots of reasons not to. You do need to pick a user name and password, and go through the initial registration procedure.

As for configuration, the modem should be set to PPPoE on the modem (which is the default for most if not all of the modems that AT&T supplies), and have your user name and password entered into its configuration (which by default is set to use the registration userid and password). You'll probably find it easiest to connect the modem direct to the PC, not using the router initially, to have direct access to the modem configuration screens. Once you've configured the modem, you can then put the router back into the circuit and it should work with no need to make any changes at the router.

There are several FAQ articles here that will guide you through the processes step by step.

I have set up two accounts without using the supplied CD. There is a registration site which will guide you through the process. I believe I used MS Internet Explorer because the site want to run an ActiveX file during installation. That can be removed later, after the account has been activated.

This FAQ link explains how to set up a new account manually:

»SBC DSL FAQ »How do I register a newly activated DSL line with SBC Yahoo?

The explanation begins on the second line of the page.

Thx for the FAQ link. Note a couple of things about the info in the FAQ:
- I used the link in the FAQ and still ended up with a sbcglobal.net domain
- toward the end of the online registration processs, there was a place where it attempted to download software (I aborted the process at that point).

I too am about to switch from RR service because I want to play a much lower monthly fee, and I also have set up 3 ATT-Yahoo connection without the CD successfully. My own connection will be a dry connection as my cell is my only phone now.

In this region yopu will end up with an sbcglobal.net domain, it may look like at&t on the outside but you will find there are still quite a few regional issues to deal with hence the reason there are so many att forums here.

As long as your new username with domain and password work in the modem you have finished everything that is needed in the registration, no software is needed nor desired in most cases. If you can connect to the net and are getting ~80% of advertised speeds on your fastest speed tests you are setup.
