More quality and less quanity!

Currently, people only seem to care about quantity...not quality.

Dish may have 100 channels, but what about their quality? Which channels are HD? How much compression is used? Do they do anything else to the signal that may degrade visual quality?

I have had the luxury of seeing both signals on a variety of TVs. I must say, the DirecTV signal seemed to have a lot less compression. On Dish, I could see much more macro blocking on running water, reds, trees, etc.

Compression seems to be the key element for satellite/cable providers. Since that's the biggest quality factor that they can control. However, no one seems to care. I remember when Uverse was about to come out. People on this site would line up and say, "How can they use VDSL for TV? They won't even be able to get an HD stream on it. etc..etc." I couldn't believe that most of the people didn't think about AT&T compression their signal to death. Guess what? They did. Most people on the Uverse forums, including myself, complain that they quality is so horrible, that is should be free. With Dish's failed satellite launch, they might have to compress even more!

Of course, content providers share in the lack of quality. As previously mentioned, upconverting SD, sending low resolution, etc. are the most common enemies of quality. I personally think that everything should be 1080p, but they might not have the equipment for that just yet. God knows they are rich even to deploy it...hehe. Since a lot of shows are not entertaining, maybe they can actually get rid of some of their channels/shows to make room for higher resolution content?

Either way, a blind, tone deaf society seem to be the majority now.

Not requiring anyone using the term "HD" to output 1080I is just another example of our govt's total incompetence leading to needless confusion and a lower standard than we should expect in this country.
I have Dish HD with no complaints, I have seen several cable co. HD and it is mostly sub standard, don't know about Direct but there is nothing better than the Dish channel info/guide buttons!
Only FIOS will make cable competitive and where I live cable does not even have the internet yet and 3rd world quality.

You're talking, of course, about a consumer public that buys TVs based on which ones have the brightest colors on the showroom floor. Retailers tinker with the contrast and color settings to move models that have been sitting too long or have better margins.

We're also still at the point where many people have just gotten their first HD TV in the past year or so. Shouldn't expect too much in the way of discerning eyes from people who are still in awe of a non SD signal.
