| Question for any installers out there....
I have a Trango ms900 radio that I using to connect to the internet. Recently my radio was switched out with another one and my service has not been the same since then, in fact its the worse it has ever been.
My signal was a solid -78 before the switch and now its -80 after the switch.
My download is a perfect 2450 down every time, but my upload does good to get past 200. The old radio got 1500 to 2000.
I have a question about the mounting of the radio, does not look like it was done correctly to me (pic attached). Could this affect me getting a good signal from the access point and why is the download solid every time I test, but the upload is always real sporadic? |

| The mast should be resting in the curved depression at the center of the radio. It appears that the installer didn't have the correct clamp, so he/she reversed one for a larger mast and offset it (very unprofessional - you should send this picture to your ISP).
As for whether it would affect the upload/download, I'll leave that to others with more experience/knowledge. Maybe the installer bumped the antenna out of position in the process . . . |

It cannot have any bearing on link quality. -- Strange as it seems, no amount of learning can cure stupidity, and formal education positively fortifies it. -- Stephen Vizinczey |

As I stated, I left the "line quality" issue to others with more experience/knowledge (apparently you fit that category - thanks). |

@alter.net | reply to mailman If you pull the rubber boot off the bottom of the radio there are signal lights, the more lit the better the signal. I would try to re-aim it yourself. The reversed bracket won't hurt anything. |

| While 2dB difference doesn't sound like much, at -80, you are near the lower threshold with probably very little fade margin. Don't forget that your RSSI affects what you get for downloads and you claim to have lost upload speed and stability. Those are determined in part by the transmit power and alignment. I imagine only your ISP can see what power you hit their AP at.
From the pics, it looks like the trees are much higher than the antennas. You might have to get more height or cut down a few trees. -- Strange as it seems, no amount of learning can cure stupidity, and formal education positively fortifies it. -- Stephen Vizinczey |

I will make an attempt to go higher. I am currently using a 50 ft. push pole at about 35 to 40 ft. What is the cheapest way to go higher? |

| said by mailman :...pole at about 35 to 40 ft. Is that the amount of pole extended or the overall height above ground? I think most 50 foot popup poles only go 45 feet. You lose 1 foot on every segment to overlap. -- Strange as it seems, no amount of learning can cure stupidity, and formal education positively fortifies it. -- Stephen Vizinczey |

| could be interference AP side or the upload bandwidth simply isnt there past the AP. Keep in mind that trango 900APs can only handle a total of 3Megs of traffic period. Either way a problem for your WISP to handle you've done all you can.
Also come on people nit-picking about the mounting, as long as its secure and not a safety hazard its good. Dont act like you've never had to jury rig a mount to fit on an odd-sized pole. |

| reply to mailman I don't believe that they are going to do anything to help me.
They are telling me that they have done all they can and there is nothing else they can do to help.
The only thing that I can see different is the actual direction that the radio is facing is different, but the antennas are of still in the same the direction( I marked the pole before they came out). When I asked them about that, they told me the antennas receive the signal and the radios position does not matter. Do you agree with that statement? |

| reply to mailman That is a M2 yagi. How long is it? You can get the 17dBi version for less than $100 from a distributor. Think Double Radius carries them. If you don't have the 17dBi that would boot the signal.
They are correct, with the external antenna it doesn't matter where the radio is mounted. I would check the radio configuration and make certain it is set to use the external antenna. |

mailman Premium join:2002-10-14 Marshall, TX | I have a dual yagi. I would say they are about 2ft. long. I have never really thought about the length of them until you asked me. I will sure check that web site out. How do I know if I have the 17dbi ones or not? |

If I had to guess what the issue was, I would say it is your ISP choking the uploads. When first installed, there may have been very few users on the system, and as time went on, more and more users were added. When this happens, one of the most common things for an ISP to do is slow down the upload speeds, as this is what kills off bandwidth for the most part. -- »www.wavecrazy.net

|
mailman Premium join:2002-10-14 Marshall, TX | Yeah, the service is terrible at -80. It was a lot smoother when I was -78. I have a tree trimmer coming out to take out all of the tree branches in the path of that antenna so I can at least rule that out. |
