| [Services] New registration process :(
I placed an order online for FastAccess DSL and it seems that now you are *FORCED* to install their crapware CD...
E-mail Address Email selection will take place during registration. The registration CD will either be shipped to you or will be delivered by the technician if you select a professional installation appointment. So... running only Linux how can I do this? is there just a pppoe login I can use to get to the registration? -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

»DSL Setup Is Ugly If You Don't Want Active X Crap Installed
I believe the only workaround discovered is to tell them you can't run the software and hope they send a tech to your house with a Windows laptop to do it for you. That's what my father did. |

| reply to joako so login with attreg@att.net with password attreg and then going to »dslinstallation.bellsouth.net does not work?
Also what if you are using a modem thats not a Bellsouth or AT&T modem... how would that work. I have access to a Windows PC but I am using a 3rd party modem (actiontek) -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

Also what if you are using a modem thats not a Bellsouth or AT&T modem... how would that work. I have access to a Windows PC but I am using a 3rd party modem (actiontek) I went to that site while running Linux and after telling me that my computer wasn't supported, it prompted me to put in the installation CD. So that's no help. But since you can use a Windows PC you should be good. Basically, all you need is to get your own individual username/password pair, then as long as you don't lose that you will never need to use Windows again.
Regarding other modems, see

| reply to joako Yes I know but doesnt the software set something on the modem? Probably login of attreg@att.net and such.
How would the software interact with the modem? Or are you saying if I use MSIE on Windows I can just do all that manually?
Did you ever try using the Konqueror web browser and tell it to imitate the useragent of Safari? -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

4 edits | reply to joako Just for grins, I tried it on a Windows XP SP3 system, but I was not using an officially supported modem (and even if I were, it is unlikely the ATT installation software would find it since it is in bridge mode on the other side of my RV082 router).
1. The »dslinstallation.bellsouth.net/ site definitely requires a Windows PC and Internet Explorer.
2. It does download an executable installation file that installs multiple Active-X driven applications.
3. The Internet Explorer session launched by the downloaded installation program accessed several different att.com, att.net and bellsouth.net servers and verified my current account information (which it asked me to enter). I did not have a new account to setup, but hopefully the program would have done that after accepting my input.
4. The Internet Explorer session then went busy for several minutes, but I saw no additional attempts to access the internet or any internal LAN devices in my firewall log or in the TCPview window I had open.
5. After several minutes, the Internet Explorer session timed out and displayed a "No Email Client Found" message (see the image below). At that point, I aborted the process because I did not want to have to clean up any more garbage on that system. I suspect that the next step would have been to setup an Outlook Express email session, and that by now if you had actually used this software to setup a new account, you would have your account name and password that could be manually entered into your modem/router PPPoE configuration.

EDIT: Speaking of cleaning up the crap left behind, there were two "official" uninstalls for "ATT-NAP" and "Yahoo Installation Manager" which only removed a few of the 50 plus files and folders. The rest I had to manually delete by deleting the folders: C:\Program Files\ATT C:\Program Files\Yahoo C:\Program Files\Common Files\Motive
There were also numerous files left behind in: C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temp
And also several orphaned files in: C:\Windows\Prefetch Which I located by their install time/date.
I finished up by cleaning the registry of all traces of the above "Program Files" entries. It was mostly Yahoo! crap in the registry (almost as hard to purge as Google crap). -- We can never have enough of nature. | reply to joako See here: »Re: how to setup new dsl access ACCOUNT w/o using the install cd
Try firefox with user agent switcher add-in. emulate either WinXP/IE7 or MacOS/Safari
firefox will download the motive software but not install it. The website doesn't know the difference and will continue the registration process.
At least I think so. I haven't had a chance to fully register a new user. I hope someone on this forum gets a chance to try it. |

| reply to joako When I setup DSL 2 years ago all I had to do is put area code and phone number @bellsouth.net as user id and just phone number with area code as password. Has that process changed now? Are people forced to install software now? That would be a deal breaker for me. |

FWIW I said use Konqueror (Linux Web browser) since its is actually very close to Safari (Apple ripped off KHTML, Knoq's rendering engine as their "Apple Webkit") -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

Perhaps you should have followed your own advice?
said by Rebellious :They sneak an installation of Motive Technologies software onto your Windows machine. Motive installs two directories with many DLLs/executables, installs a Service, and several hundred entries in your registry and there is NO uninstall procedure! That sucks! Or perhaps you could not follow your own advice because you did not have "your new Att user id and password" until you ran the AT&T install software? -- We can never have enough of nature. | .... also you can change your PW by phone, no human interaction, you're assigned a random alphanumeric by AT&T talking computer. But if you want to change PW online you must download of Motive's software, duh! BTW, it's not just an ActiveX control, it's an entire software suite.
