| Retailers that sell DSL modems?
Hi, I'm having intermittent problems with my connection lately. My modem will sync perfectly for weeks at a time and have blazing speeds, and then it will completely refuse to sync. I call TekSavvy everytime such issues arise and they blame the phone line, however the next day it will be perfectly solid for about a week and go down again. Techs have not been sent out (although there are a LOT of tickets on my account and they are in contact with a manager at bell to send a tech out to my area), i'm skeptical as to whether it is an issue with my line, because it works PERFECTLY for about a week and then goes down for a day and comes back up perfectly. A Teksavvy rep suggested I try a different modem, however I do not have access to one, all my friends use cable. So I'm wondering if there are any retailers in Toronto that have a lenient return and exchange policy where I can buy a modem and test it out and return it if its not a modem problem?? |

1 edit | reply to tipdrill407 Hi,
What type of the modem you are using?
I'd strongly advice you to get Speedtouch 516 from TSI. I had a bunch of problems when i had faulty line(or rather been too far from CO (4.7km), now i'm 250m from remote - this took a battle with bell when i complained to CRTC), however, then i get the modem, and i found this application on the net here: »dmt.mhilfe.de. this application can kick a crap out of that modem, forcing it to sync even with SNR less than 6. it has an unbelievable features and ability to manage this modem! you can even set a transmit power! I've never saw anything like this before... it even will create a log for all channels it uses and what is the noise on each of them...
Hope this helps. |

| reply to andrejus I'm using a Speedstream 5260 right now. I really don't think there is a retailer that offers what i'm looking for, accepting a return that is open without penalties. I guess I'll just wait for the tech to be dispatched and hear the results before I jump for another modem somewhere. |

| reply to tipdrill407 You can also get a refurb'd 2Wire 2700HG-B from Caneris for $25. Even if it turns out the problems you are now experiencing are not due to a bad modem that is a small price to pay for a spare. (Ask anyone whose modem got fried by a lightning strike and who lost Internet for a day or more waiting for a replacement modem.)
Although you say you have "blazing speeds" the 2Wires are also good with marginal lines. And as a bonus these units also have a decent 4-port router with 802.11b/g WiFi. |

| I agree with Nanook. I've been using a 2wire for the last 6 weeks or so and it's excellent. The wireless works well with my Wii and Eee pc. In my opinion the 2Wire works just as well as my 516. |

| reply to tipdrill407 My 2Wire has been failing on me constantly lately. Wireless dropping, PPPoE sessions that can't be reestablished, ethernet ports not working, even port forwarding rules being ignored. All of which have been fixed by rebooting the modem (sometimes by unplugging the power, due to the admin page returning errors).
I finally caved today and bought an ST516 from infonec. Can't argue with $50 for a modem that I don't have to worry about failing while I'm away for a week. |

| While I have no need to purchase 2wires (or anything else) in bulk, you have piqued my curiosity. Is there any information that you can make public? What sort of wholesale pricing do you offer? What other things do you sell wholesale (or in general)?
A bunch of local friends did a group order from Canada Computers a while back when they all switched to TekSavvy. They grouped them up to save on the shipping, and to split the cost of an extra 2wire in case something went wrong (CC didn't do any testing like Caneris does).
While we weren't aware of Caneris' offer at the time (I think this is before Caneris either started offering or announced that they were offering the 2wires on DSLR), they would have probably gone for a wholesale deal had one been available. |

| reply to tipdrill407 Caneris ROCKS! Got a 2wire modem from them a few months back! Order took a few days to process. (quite long). BUT IT Came extremely fast after processed. Had a few problems with it, but it was due to my stupidity, and the staff at caneris was very friendly and HELPFUL! 100% satisfied! Their prices are pretty low... checked other sites some are a few bucks off, but Caneris has free shipping so its all good. |

| reply to tipdrill407 I'm using a 2Wire and it's been rock solid.
Mine is a SBC-branded unit (via Canada Computers) and it was a bit of a pain to get past the telco login the first time I set it up but I have not had to touch it since. It sits beside my other comms gear, all plugged into a UPS.
The 2wire is connected directly to the demarc, and I have one DSL line filter just after the demarc to filter the whole house full of phones. The 2Wire never complains.
I was previously using a GVC and it flaked out regularly. |

What sort of wholesale pricing do you offer? What other things do you sell wholesale (or in general)? The pricing drops with volume (there are several categories) and the minimum volume requirements are very low.
We wholesale the three modems (2Wire 2700, Netopia 3347, Netopia 3346), DSL filters, line cords, Ethernet patch cables, etc.
We also offer a few related services to ISPs.
Most wholesale customers are, perhaps unsurprisingly, ON/QC based ISPs, but there are some as far as NS, BC, and US.
The filters we have generally come in two varieties, a regular single jack filter and one with a built-in splitter.

You're very welcome to take advantage of that in the future. One of the advantages is that if you happen to be within reach of our techs, then you don't pay for shipping as we'll deliver for free. |

A few days is extremely rare.
However, the order processing in general is a personal annoyance for me. We're in the midst of transforming entirely how we do the ISP, hardware, hosting, and development portions of the businesses, so one of the things we're aiming to solve is to have even more streamlined/quick/user-friendly/automated order flow.
Recently we've added more payment methods and automated a few things, so it's a step in the right direction.
Just to clarify your post, we don't have free shipping (never did). We had free delivery by our techs in some areas for about six months, but had to start charging $4 per delivery recently to offset rising fuel costs. |

Currently free delivery is for wholesale customers and our DSL subscribers only. So both my posts are correct
EDIT: area is not just GTA. Also Kitchener-Waterloo and a bunch of other Southwestern ON "pockets". Essentially if your postal code doesn't begin with L, M, or N, then you're not in-area. If it does, you *might be* in-area. |
