| New notebook - Dell Studio 15 or Gateway M-151x
Gateway m-151x
Dell Studio 15(hope the link works)
I've also looked at the msi-wind, asus eee, and other small laptops.
The wind doesn't come out til Sept or I'd really think about getting that.
Seeing as I'm looking at getting a full size laptop, I might as well get something kinda nice but still on the cheap side.
Being off shore right now makes it hard to go window shopping at best buy, though I could it'll just have to wait. So now I'm pickin y'alls brains.
What are some of the things I need to look out for with a laptop. I'm not looking for something to replace my desktop. At the same time I don't want to go the cheapest just to wish I spent a little more on the CPU or something.
I'm lookin for bluetooth and better than cheap video (that way I can do some kind of gaming in my spare time). I'd even look at a 13" or 14" screen

1 edit | I would not opt for any of the limited ultra-small notebooks, at least not in their current configurations. None of them are really suitable for any level of gaming, and although they are indeed convenient in terms of portability, their short-comings in comparison to say a standard, lightweight notebook make them a questionable buy to me.
My wife has a Sony Vaio laptop, several years old now, with a 12.1" screen, that is very light and transportable, but is a "fully functional" notebook. That is more along the line that I would recommend.
In terms of price, notebooks with a 15.4" screen tend to have the best deals, and I am not particularly brand-concious there. What you really want to look at is configuration. If you plan to do any real gaming at all, then you want something with a discrete video card, NOT integrated graphics, such as the Intel X3100. -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? |

| Nothing wrong with that Dell, but to tell you the truth, I am not overly hung up on brand name, more what configuration can I get for the money. Some folks simply like the look/feel/design of the Dells, some prefer something different. As long as you like the look and feel, as far as I am concerned Dell is as good a choice as any other.
Now, you can get a notebook with a Nvidia 8800 gpu, which is a good gaming option, but it will jack up the price a good bit, and only certain notebooks are offering them currently.
IMHO, the 8600M is a good compromise, decent gaming, not outstanding, but at a good price. Besides which, if you are going for a "thin and light", something with less than a 14.1" screen, you really aren't talking about a mega-gaming machine anyways, right? -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? |
