[HSI] Connection Dropping

I recently upgraded from 5mb/512kb to 10mb/1mb and ever since, I've noticed my connection dropping out on me roughly half a dozen times a day. Prior to my upgrade, I never lost my connection. My activity at the time of drop doesn't seem to matter, whether I'm backing up files to a remote server or just browsing news websites.

I'll provide logs and all that good info below:

I have a Motorola SB5100 (owned, not leased, btw)

Frequency 657000000 Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio 37 dB
Power Level 5 dB
Upstream Value
Channel ID 1
Frequency 29008000 Hz Ranged
Power Level 55 dBmV

the upstream power level (Power Level 55 dBmV) is too high.should be below 50 dBmv
how many splitters are you going through between gnd. block at side of house and your modem?

There is one splitter inside Charter's grey cable guard box on the side of my house and then there's a single splitter inside my house, sending one cable to my cable tv and another cable to my modem. The indoor splitter is one Charter installed, not something from walmart. I have a spare one from walmart and had the power level at 56, not much of a difference. It does seem to be more stable with the Charter splitter in use though.

The upstream power level, if memory serves, has always been high for me, regardless of the internet package or even the modem that I use.

You want your modem coming off the 1st splitter. on a 2 way splitter( one input and two outputs) the outputs have a loss of 3.5dB a threeway splitter(1 in 3 out) could have either -3.5db or -5dB or -7dB I would run a direct line from the cable drop(line from pole) or gnd.block no splitters and see what changes on my upstream power lvl.
if this doesn't lower the level below 46dBmv you need a service call. also you may move modem closer to entry point
(for test purpose only)to get truer reading of levels on main line. also keep in mind upstream pwr level could be false reading by faulty modem.

If the return is 55dbmv and you remove the 2 splitters, then technically the return should be 48dbmv, plus roughly another 1.5db for every 100ft of cable. If you do end up with a reading in the low 40s, then you've got a bad splitter or a bad peice of cable between the housebox and the modem, unless of course you have several hundred feet of coax between the housebox and the modem.

By the way, you should be able to have a 7db loss (2 2-way splitters) and still get a return reading under 50. If not, then its probably a problem with the drop losing excessive low-end signal or the return is high at the tap or return amp output.

Also, don't use your walmart splitter. It will work for a while but they are not shielded properly from outside RF signals, which will lower your SNR and cause you all kinds of problems. $2 splitters are not designed for broadband systems.

No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out
means cable plant problems - noise or connections or flakey amps.
This has been said many times before byt the techs that most knowledgeable and also on the cisco web site and by me and the problems I've had to fight the local charter people over the past 2 years.
it won't matter if your signal levels appear to be perfect - as long as you get frequent No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out then you are going to have problems.
Now the 55DB US is I would contend another sign that you have cable plant problems. Especially if you had been working fine before.
