| [Line Problem] Moneying around with the ATT/Bellsouth DSN and/or
Folks,
Been seeing periodic slowdowns with the ole Bellsouth network. Been running the speed tests (which the Broadcom site does not work with either Firefox or IE), to get a handle on timing (so far typically during the day, during the week, especially morning). Tried changing the DSN servers to the OpenDNS servers, and the system will not connect at all, loading the stock "my.att.net" page, with errors noted about not finding a site. Anyone know of any monkeying around of the Bellsouth network in the last several weeks?

Not that they have admitted. I have been getting the same slowdowns here in SC. It gets so bad that I have been unpluging my modem/router combo and it semes to help for a while.

| Poor choice of words on my part. It "connects', but will only bring up the my.att.net page. Any attempt to surf to a different page will result in that page loading. Did it on both on separate XP and Win2000 systems. It isn't any type of abnormal behavior that I have ever head or been able to dig up. As soon as I reverted back to the stock Bellsouth DNS servers, the problem went away.

| Sounded like a DNS issue to me. Was wondering if anyone else was having this problem.
As for the speed issue, testing using the dslreports tools gives anywheres from 800kbs to 2500kbs down. Using bellsouth's "tool" always gives ~2.9Mbs down/~380kbs up. The tests were run was using the modem only and also through my router; same disparity in results resulted. Also, several of the tests came back with a notation of the possibility of compression in the uploading.
I tend to suspect any that requires one to identify oneself before running; there's always that possibility of the "tool" looking up account info and using that to "correct" the results.
Just asking in my ineloquent way.

| reply to Amontilado You may need to clean up the temporary internet files on the computer and flush the dns on them when you switch to OpenDNS. To flush the dns on the computers open command prompt by selecting Run and typing cmd. When the command prompt opens type ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter. You may also want to try changing the way IE handles webpage after you clean the temporary internet files by clicking the setting button in that section on Internet Properties and change Automatic to Every time I start Internet Explorer or Every Time I visit that Webpage.
Give both of these a try if you have not already done so if you want to use another DNS Server. |

Thank you for your informative post. Appreciate the tips. Will give them a try. Thanks a bunch. Now if I can only figure out the inconsistent speed issue (which I see others have posted).
