It's certainly expected that the millions who already own an iPhone aren't going to kick down hundreds of bucks on an upgrade.
This is certainly excellent news for Apple. |

Facts are it didn't meet expectations$$$. Still a good phone but they had to sell it in more countires due to soft US economy. The number I keep seeing thrown around is that Apple sold 495k phones over the weekend in the US. |

It's certainly expected that the millions who already own an iPhone aren't going to kick down hundreds of bucks on an upgrade. This is certainly excellent news for Apple. For the rest of us that bought an iPhone during its early days on-market, we can still get in on the iPhone 3G action at the new, lower price-point. AT&T will be allowing any current iPhone customers, in good standing (you did pay your bills, didn't you?), to buy a new iPhone 3G at the subsidized price of $199 for the iPhone 3G 8GB or $299 for the iPhone 3G 16GB.
Of course, you'll have to sign-up for a new 2-year contract with AT&T. Whatever time you have left on your AT&T iPhone contract will be nixed and replaced with a new 2-year contract from AT&T.

DogfatherPremium join:2007-12-26 Laguna Hills, CA 4 edits | That was not what I was told by the salesman at AT&T. I was told only "new" for full upgrade eligible (out of a contract) customers get the $199 price. Since I'm still within my current iPhone contract I was specifically told that I was not yet "upgrade eligible" and wouldn't be eligible for the cheap price until my contract expires. I was told (and this is confirmed in the AT&T FAQ) that I would have to pay 2X the price for an "early upgrade" plus $18.
said by AT&T : How much will I pay for iPhone 3G? If you are upgrade eligible and your account is in good standing, you will pay $199 for 8GB (black) and $299 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required.
You have the option to purchase an early upgrade priced at $399 for 8GB (black) or $499 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required. Coming soon, AT&T will offer a no-commitment option of $599 for 8GB and $699 for 16GB.

And they were talking about me qualifying for an upgrade when my contract expires...didn't matter whether or not I paid full price for the phone. |

No Way! LINK Well Wall Street thinks it's good news. The share price went up 2% even though the numbers are in line with analysts predictions. The original iPhone sold 270,000 units in 2 days. This unit broke the million barrier.
I will add a quote courtesy of the New York Times. "We don't yet know the breakdown of how many phones were sold to new customers and how many existing iPhone customers upgraded, but regardless, sales during the first weekend were very impressive," said Jeff Kagan, an independent telecommunications analyst,"
This new iPhone is nothing short of a smashing success. |

For the few things I do Edge does okay. GPS, never use it (have it in the car) and for the live-traffic, the 1st gen locator gets me close enough.
It would be nice to have and I was all gung-ho for it...but then I came to my senses, especially after getting the 2.0 sw and a bunch of apps. It's like having a new phone all over again.
I'd rather spend the money on an HD 3870 for my Mac Pro or another 1TB HDD. |

 | reply to sheik28 said by sheik28:You even quoted it... The original iPhone sold 700,000 in 2 days According to this article( »www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/techn···chnology) in the New York Times the original iPhone sold 270,000 unites in 2 days. See the second paragraph where it says (and I quote)"The original iPhone, introduced in late June 2007 in the United States only, sold about 270,000 units in its first two days. Sales topped one million by early September." So, the original Iphone took about 10 weeks to break 1 million units sold.
Here is another article that says the original iPhone sold 270 units in the same time frame. »www.redherring.com/blogs/24480
Here is another article from MacWorld that states the original iPhone took 74 days to reach the 1 million barrier. »www.macworld.com/article/134484/···nes.html |

And they were talking about me qualifying for an upgrade when my contract expires...didn't matter whether or not I paid full price for the phone. That's definitely NOT the way it works. I am as ineligible as you could possibly get. I bought a Blackjack last July, then bought an iPhone in November. They had no problem selling the new iPhone to me at $199. The AT&T girl who went around checking eligibility repeatedly said to people, "you have an iPhone, so you should be Ok, but let's check.".
Had I NOT bought the iPhone, I would definitely not be eligible for $199 price now.
Did you buy your iPhone NEW? I wonder how they track the origin of them. I mean, I transferred my original iPhone to my roommate. Does that mean he's now eligible for $199? -- Laser eye surgery rocks! I love frickin' laser beams. |

I was told $399 "early upgrade" price until my current iPhone plan contract expires, despite having bought the iPhone brand new and obviously paying full price for it. |
