The Speedtouch 516v6 is a solid modem. Personally, I have not heard of a SINGLE case of "DOA" with these modems.
They should also last quite awhile, since DSL modems themselves are quite hardy. Just do your part and put a surge protector/UPS in between, or it's your loss, really
If you rent a modem from TSI, you end up paying more eventually.
Bell has probably milked at least $500 (if not more) out of my family "renting" a Speed Touch Home...! |

| I don't like to purchase hardware until I know I can trust the service provider. I bought my own cable modem when I had Cox Communications and it ran great for 2 years. That same cable modem was flaky with RCN. RCN's policy was that if they have to send a tech out to your house and the problem is with your equipment, they'll charge you $49 (circa 2003) each time. So, I had to disconnect my own modem and use RCN's just to avoid the $49 charge for the monthly service calls.
So, I do think it is wise to rent for a while and if the company seems trustworthy and your connection is solid, then buy your own hardware. Otherwise, owning could be much more expensive than renting. |
