| How old is your computer? If you have Roxio CD/DVD software installed that does conflict with magicJack and is known to crash the system. If your computer is older -- made prior to 2005 then you may have issues. One can get an older computer to work with MJ but that effort may not be trivial. -- David Mozer IT-Expert on Call Information Technology for Home and Business |

| Good morning, gatr.
said by mozerd :If your computer is older -- made prior to 2005 then you will have issues. One can get an older computer to work with MJ but that effort is not trivial. This is simply untrue and factually inaccurate. magicJack installed in a snap and functioned flawlessly on my Hewlett Packard Pavilion m400y Media Center P.C. purchased in June 2004.
I cannot speak to conflicts with Roxio software from personal experience, but others have made similar complaints regarding installing magicJack on P.C.s with Roxio also installed.
As an aside, my Media Center P.C. on which I first installed magicJack also has ArcSoft Showbiz 2, iTunes, MediaFACE 5, Sonic Record Now!, Windows Media Player and Windows Movie Maker. All of these programs burn CDs and/or DVDs in one form or another and none of these programs interfered with magicJack.
gatr, there are many knowledgeable folks here who can take the time to help you. However, you're going to need to take the time to provide solid details on your computing environment and the problem that you're encountering so we have an idea in what direction to proceed.
Good luck!

| Lisa ..thanks for your reply ...It is a Gateway PC and it could be as much as 4-5 years old ...but does have XPSP2 and would consider it up to standards ...Comcast cable ..Linksys router ... As stated as soon as I plugged in the MJ windows gave me the severe error message. tried all of the USB ports with/without the cable ....after 4 hours with MJ support they decided I needed to forward the 2 ports ( have the numbers at home), Guess I'll try that tonight and see ....thanks .....mike |

Were computers in the 2004 era commonly USB 2? And, was USB 2 implemented reliably back then? That would be my concern. I've read it doesn't work with USB 1. I'd be worried about the early days of USB 2.
Would an external, powered USB 2 hub minimize potential deficiencies in an older machine with USB 2?
I have an April 2005 Dell Latitude D600. MJ works fine.

said by amigo_boy :I've read it doesn't work with USB 1. I'd be worried about the early days of USB 2. I would like to know where you read that magicJack does not function satisfactorily with USB 1.x. I don't see any technical reason for this to be true other than the fact that it might be somewhat difficult to find a computer running Windows XP (certainly not Windows Vista) that actually has USB 1.x ports. The only USB 1.x computer I own runs Windows 98 SE, which is hardly a suitable platform for testing magicJack/USB 1.x compatibility. So, it would be useful to post a reliable reference and link as to where you read that magicJack doesn't function with USB 1.x.
We appear to have an awareness/education issue here. The early days of USB 2.0 were 2000/2001, not 2004. A formal USB 2.0 standard was implemented by the end of 2001. USB 2.0 has been around for over seven (7) years. The likelihood of anyone encountering a USB 1.x port with magicJack is rather remote and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't function anyway. USB 2.0 is backward compatible with USB 1.x albeit at a slower data rate since USB 2.0 introduced the 480Mbps data rate, which is hardly necessary for magicJack.
said by amigo_boy :Would an external, powered USB 2 hub minimize potential deficiencies in an older machine with USB 2? Maybe. The USB (1.x and 2.0) power specification permits up to 500mA (0.5A) of current to be drawn from a USB port. Recent additions to the USB specification since 2006 allow loads up to 1.5A. The voltage, of course, is fixed at five (5).
For anyone wishing to learn more about the history of USB and the emerging USB 3.0 specification (with a targeted whopping 4.8Gbps data rate), kindly visit »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB .

| reply to gatr I'm running MagicJack reliably on a Dell Dimension 4100 [P3-733, 512MB RAM, upgraded to XP SP3 and used for a fileserver (and MagicJack host)] with a USB 2.0 PCI card. USB1 works, but it's been my experience that USB2 works better [no hiccups]. BTW that Dell is also running Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum, which hasn't had any issues with MJ. |

| reply to lcompton Before you posted I found this method (same as yours?) and it seemed to work ....
quote: 1. Unplug the MagicJack USB Dongle. Go to "Start" in Windows and click on "run" and type (enter) regedit and press Enter. 2. Now Click on + Sign next to HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE. 3. Click on + Sign next to SYSTEM. 4. Click on + Sign next to CurrentControlSet. 5. Click on + Sign next to Enum. 6. Locate the folder called USB. Right Click on the Folder and Click on "Permissions". 7. In permissions Click on the Check Mark called "Allow" to the right of "Full Control". 8. Click OK. 9. Next Click on + Sign next to USB and locate folders called "Vidxxxx". 10. Right Click on one at a time and select Delete. 11. Next Click on - Sign next to USB. 12. Right Click on the folder named USBSTOR and Allow permissions. 13. Next Click on + Sign next to USBSTOR. 14. Locate the folders named "CdRom&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev" and "Disk&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev" 15. Right Click on these Folders one at a time and hit Delete.
Seems Silmilar to your method ..
After the uninstall I tried to install MJ again and seems to detect the device and install ...as soon as the bubble sez your USB device is ready the PC will try to reboot(crash) but hangs up on the windows logo screen where you can enter Bios ...only powerdown will get things going ...MJ still would not work .. It adds 2 Drives ...a removable and a CD_rom .... both named MagicJack ...but both are Generic Window's Icon. they will not work ... The phone has a Dialtone but that is all ...It has never got to the registration screen. Running the Upgrade has no effect and does give the "you MUST us USB message ....m
Just to make sure ... I can use a base station type phone that has the wireless handsets ? |

Mark When I bought my HP PC back in 2004 it was still a selling point and I paid extra to have it. So it was still in it's infancy at that point to the masses. Only 2 out of 5 or so USB ports were USB 2.0. |

| reply to gatr Good evening, Mike.
First off, let me say what a totally neat-looking cordless telephone system you have. Can you raise the ISS on that thing?!
Pictured above is my Uniden DCT6485 Cordless Telephone System in use with my magicJack. It's not nearly as nifty as yours, but it does the job.

Running the Upgrade has no effect and does give the "you MUST us USB message ....m This certainly doesn't sound good at all. However, I remain optimistic that magicJack can be successfully setup with your P.C.
I'm going to be time-challenged until the weekend at which time I will be attempting surgery on one of my laptops (I'm going to attempt to install an OEM Bluetooth module inside my Compaq V3000, which should have all of the joy of a root canal without the benefits of anesthesia.) Anyway, I'd like to get a better handle on your hardware and software computing environment to see if we can make some progress. Previously, you mentioned that you have a Gateway P.C. and you believe it to be 4-5 years old. How about a model number? Free disk space? What other non-OEM harware do you have installed in the computer? Also, how about a run-down of the software installed on the machine?
How do you feel about allowing me access to your computer via Remote Assistance? I worked with another forum member last week to get their magicJack up and running. I think they're enjoying their magicJack too much because they haven't been back to post since. Anyway, I understand if remote assistance makes you uncomfortable, so absolutely no pressure at all.
So, if you can provide a run-down of your computing environment, that will furnish us with some basics to start pondering as we work through your P.C.-magicJack compatibility issue.
said by gatr :Just to make sure ... I can use a base station type phone that has the wireless handsets? Yes, absolutely. As you can see from the image at the top of this message, that is exactly what I use.
Thank you for writing.

| reply to gatr Lisa .... I know the drill .... not enough hours in the day! I'm bad about jumping from one fire to the next and never seem to get any "fires" out ...so no worries .... I do have some good news ... I decided to try MJ on an older HP1170 I have and ......in 5 minutes it was installed ..registered ..number assigned (904.435.xzxz) and good to go .....go figure ... So much for the need of the latest and greatest hardware ....:) ..by the way USB 1.0 ...
I would like to conquer the desktop though ...is it just a guy thing? So yes when you get time maybe we can look at it .... Know Belarc advisor? I can run that and post the results ...maybe something will be obvious ...and no problems with remote assistance either ...mike ..
mod note: thanks to an alert member, the phone number above has been obscured. Never a really good idea to post personal information in a public place... |

I was told by tech support that XP with SP3 will not work well with MagicJack and they suggest downgrading to SP2. I've had a few issues with mine and I do wonder if it is in fact a SP3 issue on XP. Have you had any issues running SP3?
Thanks |

| reply to Javaguy216 I'm really not sure why they don't recommend SP3.
I haven't had any problems using SP3. I've used MJ on a homemade Asus P4P800MX [P4-Prescott 3GHz, 1GB RAM], A Dell Dimension 4100 [P3-733MHz, 512MB RAM], a Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop [Celeron 2Ghz, connected via 802.11g wireless] and a Dell Optiplex GX150 [P3-1Ghz, 512MB RAM]. All of these machines run XP SP3. The only issues I observed were a bit of occasional hiccup on the wireless connection and on the USB 1 connections on the older computers when there were a lot of other applications running. I decided to host MagicJack on the Dimension 4100 since it's on most of the time anyway [used as a fileserver]. All I had to do to get rid of the occasional hiccups on the 4100 was to install a PCI USB 2.0 card.
There are specific issues between SP3 and other software [especially Symantec/Norton 2008 products] which can corrupt TCP/IP connectivity [can trash your Internet connection], but since I don't use any Symantec 2008 products, I haven't seen them on any of my computers.
For optimal functioning of the MagicJack, I'd recommend:
-Run it on a dedicated machine. It can be an 8-year-old antique as long as you Have XP running and you upgrade the USB. This should be the sole function of this machine, unless it's a fileserver/printserver [If you have a quad-core server-grade machine that is your only PC, then you can ignore this]. Also, [with my apologies to MJ] you can turn off the monitor and you won't have to look at the softphone or the ads.
-USB 2.0 seems to work better than USB 1.0 or 1.1.
-Wireless [802.11g] works, but not perfectly. Maybe it would be better with a MIMO wireless card and router, or on 802.11n or pre-n hardware. |

If you've got a quad-core machine, it should support MagicJack without any trouble. I'm becoming suspicious that it doesn't get along with certain manufacturers' hardware, but I can't prove that. I'm waiting to see if there's a common thread somewhere that links all the people who have a problem [or possibly two or more common threads]. |
