I don't like to purchase hardware until I know I can trust the service provider. I bought my own cable modem when I had Cox Communications and it ran great for 2 years. That same cable modem was flaky with RCN. RCN's policy was that if they have to send a tech out to your house and the problem is with your equipment, they'll charge you $49 (circa 2003) each time. So, I had to disconnect my own modem and use RCN's just to avoid the $49 charge for the monthly service calls.
So, I do think it is wise to rent for a while and if the company seems trustworthy and your connection is solid, then buy your own hardware. Otherwise, owning could be much more expensive than renting. |
