I wonder what Apple was doing for a year. I know they added a GPS chip, 3G support, designed a new case. But it's the same ARM11 Samsung chip, not the Intel Atom, like people wanted. And it still uses the same CPU and software.
Because he doesn't get his preferred CPU or some new software, he comes to the conclusion that the same exact phone in a new case with GPS and 3G support is a "step backward". |

Actually I'd be inclined to agree to an extext. It's not necessarily a step backwards, but it definitely wasn't a step forward, and it was an overall unnecessary step to begin with. A year's worth of waiting for what equates to features that could have easily been done in a month or 2... I mean I know they did it to milk customers and have people buy the crap version, but they still could have put a little effort into the new one.
It's supposed to be a MULTImedia phone - but the Camera is crap?
Let's say they keep the crap camera - At LEAST add a flash.
Apple wants to takeover more of the market by offering GPS... - Why not offer a slideout keyboard option?
Really... they could have easily done all 3 of those in the time frame it took them to add what little things they did, and it would have make it a much better device.
There's a good reason many of us more "informed" and less fashion-oriented buyers don't buy iPhones, but instead buy other devices. That's because the thing is honestly crap. Beyond its interface, it is truly a mediocre device at best. I put alot of iPhone-mimicking programs on my current device just to further prove how mediocre it is. I have a couple of friends that have iPhones that kind of hate me for it actually, heh.
I had more fun with my RAZR than I had while I was playing around with an iPhone.
Don't get me wrong... I actually wanted an iPhone... but they heavily underwhelmed me with the hardware, and the interface alone wasn't enough of a reason to make a purchase. I was looking forward to this new release, but yet again, the hardware remains mediocre.
Maybe I'm crazy, but if I saw something like the Samsung Omnia preparing for release, I wouldn't release a device that was inferior to some of the devices released before it, let along some of the devices down the road. |

 | first off I own a iphone, unlocked of course. Second, the best thing that apple did with the iPhone is get other phone makers to get off there lazy ass and give us some cool stuff. Palm dragged like nobody's business, Samsung gave up long ago improving their smartphones. Blackberry constantly jacked around making phones that were missing a feature that everyone wanted. i.e. No wifi but gps or vice versa. Much the same way that amd and cyrix CPU makers got intel to start pumping out the chips at decent prices. |

I don't even have an iPhone... I'm just looking at what's being reported at face value and commenting most literally.
They haven't removed any features so an iPhone with GPS and 3G support is at least a little bit better than the same one without. That's actually a step forward, no? Maybe a tiny step. |

Just because Palm is dragging on the software end of things doesn't mean it isn't making good phones. The bottom line is that I can do -way- more on my Centro then I can on the iPhone - And it's even a smaller device, and it cost less. |

I have a PDA running WM5, and there is an Iphone style interface called 'IFONZ' that's pretty interesting. It seems to play well with my device, and is very configurable. |

However, it still does the job - and opera mini is always a choice. |

I can't see why anyone would want to run a launcher mod that mimicks the iPhone. The iPhone's own launcher is designed around the devices own button deficiency. You allready have the buttons - So use them and assign them to the appropriate functions. |

Most notably I don't have to lubricate myself for Apple's development schlong when I want to code for it - and I can do whatever I want with it.
Internet Radio to boot, and no half-assed solution that forces me to be reliant on an application which isn't even designed for playback.
I can change the battery.
When playing NES/SNES/ whatever else games on it I have actual buttons to use. Ever try playing a game even as simple as Contra on the iPhone? It's an exhausting and horrible experiance not having real buttons to press. Playing Doom on the iphone becomes some sort of horrible joke.
Those are the smaller things for me. However, the primary is really just how closed off the iPhone still is; which then leads to my next point of the massive software library allready available for my Centro.
And I forgot to add - The most important feature is that of actually working good as a Phone. I can't really say the same about the iPhone. There is lots of 'i' but less phone in the iPhone.
Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe the majority of these issues I had with my limited experiance have been corrected. Of course, I still only paid 100 bucks for my Centro - and i'm not forced to pay for the ultra-expensive plan just to use the phone features. |

Please elaborate -- what can you do on the Centro that the iPhone can't? Nothing... he doesn't even know what he's talking about. You CAN change the battery on the new 3G iPhones. They're not sealed. Check out the many websites where they've already dissected them.

No, actually he's got something there: Internet Radio. Now THERE'S a dealbreaker... using my phone to listen to INTERNET RADIO... yup... that would make my life complete... -- 1/20/09 = The final day of our Retarded Cowboy President! |

And what is your "limited experience" with it as a phone?
There were 10 million downloads of iPhone applications over the last 3 days. |

Considering I can access my entire music collection using a combination of internet radio broadcasting off of my home machine and some thrown together code on my webserver - It is a deal breaker.
If Apple were smart, they would embrace this idea and embed it into the iPhone as an easy to use process. Do you have any idea how much more popular and 'innovative' people would call the iPhone if Apple upgraded iTunes to stream music to a users iPhone using their own internet connection, and some sort of Apple hosted backend to relay data back to the users computer for song selection?
Anyways, I didn't know you could change the battery on the new iPhone. Although I have a sneaking suspicion it isn't an easy process.
Mind you, I never said I hated the iPhone. I think the device has lots of potential. The current state the iPhone is in however, is not one which is very friendly to a user like myself. I like how it's using the ARM11 core - And I'd like to mess around with that. Unfortunatly, the iPhone is about as open as a mexican jumping bean. The potential is there, she is jumping around, but the firm grip of reality is around her. The lack of buttons is still definatly something I don't like at all though, and the slight issue of being way to expensive still.
And by the way, the Centro runs Garnet not Windows. So if anything i'm sporting the Garnet cap. It is a tattered and old cap - But it still fits just fine. |

You allready have the buttons - So use them and assign them to the appropriate functions. I personally run such programs just to get my iPhone-toting & loving friends off my back (and the occasional friend of a friend that mentions an iPhone). Generally I'm the one of my friends with all the "latest high tech" stuff, and I started getting sick of them saying "where's your iPhone," or "when are you getting an iPhone?" The day that finally tore it was when a friend of mine kept saying "I just gotta press this button to do this, you gotta do this & that." So I decided to make the iPhone look like the mediocre device it was by getting a few iPhone copycat programs to run just to prove my point.
I don't use them all the time though, just when necessary for shutting iPhone whores up. The only iPhone program I consistantly run is for my contacts just because they're easier to manage that way.
Plus it looks like my next device may be touchscreen only so I guess I outta start seeing if I can get used to the idea... |
