No vendor has the same level of functionality on 64-bit and 32-bit, certainly not if it involves hooking certain APIs that are protected by PatchGuard. This is not a joke, its a very serious problem that Microsoft has caused for all vendors. Right-click scanning is certainly not something that requires patchguard workarounds, but other HIPS functionality especially SONAR does.

SONAR under 64-bit Vista is a known issue.
All product that have any form of HIPS like SONAR at least have differences between 32-bit and 64-bit and you can blame Microsoft for that for the inability to hook certain APIs in the kernel. I'm sure Symantec will implement a 64-bit solution next year for SONAR but I can't see it being identical to the one on 32-bit Windows.

As for updates - we send them out every 5-15 minutes - unless you are in full screen movie or game mode, in which case we supress non-critical activities and warnings until you are done (this can be turned off).

To the question about firewalls, yes you can adjust the firewall with a high degree of granularity - under settings/intenet settings/smart firewall (you need to scroll down).

That was an old fix for the bin files to delete old virus defs that may have become corrupt. They are no longer in Symantec Shared.

Seriously though, this is some fantastic looking software. It's like when an old girlfriend gets out of the pen after 5 years. This version is a whole new beginning !! It didn't even need to reboot after being installed. Options and functionality have a very refined and powerful feel with no clutter or having to dig though layers of config pages. System loading feels very light, like a program with no bloat is supposed to feel. I think Old Yeller is finally back this time ! Detection rates ? Let's not go there. We all know the story about detection rates these days.

Since you mentioned me by name I guess I have to answer :)

I don't work directly on that area so I don't know the exact reason why this feature was removed. I've been told that the effectiveness had significantly diminished due to new techniques that advertisers are using, and, given that the browsers now have this sort of functionality built in, there wasn't much customer value in improving it.

In nis 2007 there was a tool to block pop up banners and ads. In nis 2008 according to a friend this tool was no longer included. Just wondering if Nortons put this back into 2009 NIS.

That would indeed be good information. I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt if you'll get a reply. Some vendors prefer to keep their forum posters' affiliations quiet.

Based on Symantec's past performance and responses, I'm hesitant to spend good billable time testing betas for them. Even if the product proves to be usable, their declining support level is an issue - at least to those of us who have support contracts.

However, for the home user I hope it works out for them. I'm sure it will work for many.

Licensing information will be left behind in case you need to reinstall so you wont have to re-enter everything again. The only other thing left behind is Identity Safe info and thats only if you choose to. NAV receives daily definition updates since v2006. There may be more than one update per day if Symantec decides that there is a need to release them. What do you like better about Avira ?
Don't want to take away from this thread but first of all it works as it is supposed to work. No elaborate changes to try and make it work.
Very smooth on system and very light.
I have updates set for every 2 hrs.
Consistantly scores at the top for detection.
Have had no conflicts with any other software on my system.
There are many threads about Avira here and at Wilders.
Check them out if you want to know more. :)
