| PS3 media download service starts today.
At Sony Computer Entertainment's 2008 Media Briefing, SCE announced its long-awaited video download service. Its partners include Fox, MGM, Lionsgate, Warner, Disney, Paramount and Turner. This service includes movies, TV and much more. Separating this from other video services, the video will all be able to be transferred to the PlayStation Portable.
As far as pricing goes, TV shows will be available in both HD and SD, starting at $1.99. Movies start at $2.99 for rental, and $9.99 to buy. The download service browser is quite similar to the PlayStation Network front end, so those used to buying games on the service will be familiar with the interface. The service offers a video preview of its content (which can be full-screened), and also lists details such as run time, language and description. It should take about 1 hour for a 2-hour movie to download, and the service offers progressive download to watch video as it's streaming in.
Pretty sweet can be transfered off the PS3. |

Any freebies? Between Netflix in the mail (not free, but flat rate), Netflix streaming, and everything my TiVo can record or download, I have a tough time seeing myself going back to paying on a per-movie basis. -- Interested in open source engine management for your Subaru? |

I'll stick with the DirecTV video download system, aside from PPV and NBC, most stuff is free with the monthly subscription. Users may wish to be careful about internet usage caps. Start downloading a lot of HD stuff, and some ISP's consider cancellation. -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

| it is meant to compete with xbox360 movie store and apple TV. I imagine most content is no better than 720p (which is a big improvement on the compressed crap that cable TV delivers on-demand). If ISPs were open with their caps everyone would have an idea how close they were to the limit in a given month. |

| I'm downloading XAM'd right now which is an anime from the creators of Full Metal Alchemist. PSN downloads are generally o-k for me. I think I get about 150 kb/s on average. Which is barely touching my 10 mbit connection.
So yea, it'll take me a couple hours to download it (1.5 gb in HD).
You have 14 days to watch an ep and once you first play it 24 hours to watch it before it "expires".
So far, the movie/show selection is quite impressive for an initial release and, being an anime buff myself, I see a couple good anime on there. I also purchased the robotech movie/ova they have on there too.
Oh and for those that care; XAM'd is japanese w/english subtitles but the rest of the anime are english dubbed.
Anyway, so far so good. I don't see myself using it all the time but every now and then, such as for a certain movie or episode of something it's pretty cool. Plus, if you download fast enough, you can play the movie while you're dling it so there's barely any wait (unfortunately, my download speeds from the PSN aren't fast enough for me to do that). |

| reply to Stu Pidaso we are talking about the Download services such as movies and tv shows. What does that have to do with Netflix which you would only be able to use if u have a Netflix account.
Tv shows and movies from Fox, MGM etc are available in HD also just like the PS3 download service. -- Mets, Cowboys, Devils |

| There's a tab that says "Videos" on the top of the store. If you don't have it yet then..that's weird.
I know Canadians and Europeans don't have access to it yet..pretty sure US is the only ones right now (you're in the US though so you should have it). |

Has anyone gave this a go yet on the PSN? This starts to blend categories together. Now my PC, PS3 or DirecTV DVR can download high quality video content legally. It'd be interesting if someone has the patience to discover how many PS3, Xbox 360's, and DirecTV VOD capable boxes are out in the U.S. I'd bet it is several million.
I know from my DirecTV experience that HD consumes many GB of download per video. If Comcast doesn't act soon to impose its caps, they may have lost, as they'll need to start canceling hundreds of thousands of customers.
How the heck does Korea wire everything, everywhere, and the U.S. seems to have trouble providing each family more than 200 GB per month? -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

| reply to Stu Pidaso actually I must be blind because there is a big box at the right of my PSN store, the one that shows a movie marquee image with "now shoing on psp and ps3"? is that the 'tab' you guy see? .. but .. although you can move to it (border highlight) selecting it does nothing? |

| reply to Jaime said by Jaime :No, there are two buttons near the top left of the screen, one says game and the other says video. Click the video tab. I just checked, and there is a video tab on my PS3 store. After selecting it, there was a nicely laid out video store, if anything better layout than that provided by my DirecTV VOD DVR's.
However, the same Aqua Teen Hunger Force from adult swim in SD for example, which I can download for free from DirecTV, costs $1.99 at the PS3 store. I'd like Sony to consider what NBC did with their fee content over at DirecTV, they priced all SD programming at $.99, all HD at $1.99 per show.
The PS3 store seems to have a better layout, and overall a better / larger video selection than the DirecTV library. It is annoying that the same content is free from one (DirecTV DVR), and pay on the other (Sony PS3). Though I guess that is why we have competition.
I wonder if Sony can offer a subscription service, similar to that of DirecTV and make most content free per download, for a monthly subscription fee. The library Sony is currently showing is worth a subscription if it were available.
Now I have 2 ways to download video content and view it legally, plus Comcast which wants to put a cap on how many GB I can use per month. Lucky me -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |
