[ps3] "New" PS3 model announced at E3?

Today, I caught the tail end of the Sony Conference at E3 2008 and I have questions.

First, is the "new" 80GB model that was announced today, just a 40GB model with the bigger hard drive in it?

From what the wiki says, it has all the hallmarks of being a 40GB neutered model. Even the price drop is not worth it to me to lose the extra ports, which I would use and PS2 compatibility.

Is the Wiki right about all this or am I over-reacting?

If it is right, what are they gonna do for the 499 model, since the have a two model point? Put out a 120 or 160GB with all the trimmings?

If not, am I better off buying the MGS4 PS3 bundle and a extra PS3 controller now instead of waiting until September for this "new" model to show itself?

As ya'll may be able to tell, this news was welcome, but pissed me off greatly once it sunk in if everything is true.

I imagine the larger sku is there to bolster the appeal of the online movie store now in PSN. If you are the tiniest bit technical then buy the guts you prefer and buy the fattest drive you can and put it in. The other option might be to connect an external storage enclosure and then pick that target to "save" things too instead, but I'm not sure about any limits they've placed on that.

Basically, Sony has ceased shipments of the 40gig and will also halt shipments of the mgs4 80gig bundle.

This new PS3 sku will be the "only" ps3 on the market, its basically the same console as the 40gig that's out now but has a 80gig drive instead of 40.

..So if you want a backwards compatible PS3, go get the mgs4 80gig bundle before it ceases to exist. (I could care less about playing ps2 games, and if I did..I'd go pick up a ps2 fat for 40 bucks.)

O, the new ps3 sku that's replacing the 40gig still has the $399 price point.

Not that anyone really cares, but there's a discrepancy between "but won't play PS2 or PSone games" and "exact same functionality as the 40GB model." All PS3's currently play PSone games, it's entirely software-driven.

your responses are really random.
What have blu-ray movies got to do with the PSN movie store?

who pay to download them anyways

the download speed is only 0Kbyte/s to 10Kbyte/s

it would take an month or two at that speed

Yes, you've clinched it for me. I'll be going for the MGS4 bundle tomorrow and upgrading the HD later to the largest I can.

If an external HD is also an option, that'd be an even better option cause it'd be a larger drive then most the PS3 can take at this point.

Thanks for the quick answer.

you must have a feeble connection, or you're filling it with bittorrent traffic in your eternal search for a free ride. Everyone has a different situation but the PSN store can stream HD movie previews to me ok so it isn't limited to "10kb-20kb".

Yes, I'll be doing that tomorrow morning. BC is very important to me.

Thanks for the link to the story.

So..um... does that mean when the msg4 bundles go away, we will only be left with an 80gb version without those flash memory card readers? They're going to phase that out? Interesting.

Yes, that's right. In the "new" model they're gonna put out, it'll have 2 USB ports instead of 4, Wifi still, no flash card readers, still has chrome trim, no SACD support, and no BC capability.

Personally, I could care less about chrome trim and more focus on the insides if it'd get me BC and the ports.

As for the ports and flash card readers, they'd probably want you to use external devices for them. Not a bad idea, but not really great either.

If you want a BC capable PS3 and the extra ports, get the MGS bundle while you still can. It may take some doing like I had to do.

My guess is they will eventually make another PS2 BC version in the not too distant future (or do a firmware update on these new 80Gb ones to add BC). Remember the previous bundle was discontinued for a few months when they announced the MGS4 bundle. Sony would be shooting themselves in the foot if they didn't continue to support the "bigger" PS2 model since its features are still in demand.

Since it's a cable Internet service it's more likely you have neighbors hogging the traffic and/or TW hasn't upgraded the capacity in your area. Either way this isn't a Sony issue. It's an ISP issue.

An external drive is possible but, because of the PS3's inability to read anything but FAT32 external drives there are quite a few restrictions, like the inability to save files larger than 4GB. You also need an older OS (or specialized software like Partition Magic) to format the partition because Vista and XP won't format a partition larger than 32GB in FAT32.

I imagine a firmware upgrade could easily solve that problem.
