Re: last: tag

I don't usually complain about changes here.. I know I'll get used to most of them.

I miss the last poster column - it's really an odd thing to remove. It's useful information, especially in the more social forums. I don't like to compare other forums, but sSometimes you have to look at other forum software and think, if they all have it, maybe there's a reason.

If you're looking for ideas to save horizontal space, a lot of other places stack the info under a last post column. So, one column, date is on top of the last poster - Check fatwallet, slickdeals, IPB.

1) I like the last user posted info. It helps me determine if I'll bother reading that thread or using the catch-up feature for the forum or not. Granted, I only got to see the last poster but it was enough for me. I for one would like it back.

2) A better way to design layout for the iphone is not to mess with the defacto layout but to provide a mobile-specific layout. Also, the iPhone in particular lets you flip 90 degrees to increase screen-width, zoom-in, etc etc. I use the iPhone to browse the forums several times a week and had no problems with the original layout.

3) If having too many columns is an issue for non-mobile browsers with lower resolutions screens, then make the columns (or more of the forum layout) customizable by the user.

I sort of used it. If it was a topic I was interested in and I saw that someone new replied to the topic. I would look at the name and realize that it may be a waste of time to look at the new reply and to wait until someone else came and posted to the topic.

I'm going to leave it as it is for a while, and work on some other stuff with the layout. There is lots of useful information that could be displayed: how long ago in minutes a topic was updated, how big the last post was, whether a mod or vip has posted in a topic, whether someone you 'follow' has posted yet or not, whether there are lots of deletes, if a topic was resurrected. I could go on.

One or more of these things could have been in from the start (instead of a clickable "last poster" name) and some people would have developed habits that involve checking for this, and would simply hate to see it go.

The only answer is a fully custom layout for logged in users where you select the columns you want to see - and maybe that is where it has to go.

Ditto.

And to change it for that minority - the iPhone user...

ugh.

Yep...I can view it no problem on my Touch. I just zoon in if I need to.

That would be great, but I guess I'm at a loss why something is taken away and not replaced with something either as or more useful then what was removed.

Looking at the screen shot below, removing something that seems a lot of people used and preferred to see based on the above posts and not replacing it with anything while leaving plenty of space seems like a less then optimal user experience.

And right justifying the forum name smushes (technical term) all the text together vs it being spaced nicely when it was left justified.

And why add the * vs just hyperlink the posters name to do the same thing and save a character?

Huh. I was so busy being irritated by the Asterisk ( »Please Take The Asterisks Away ) that I didn't even notice the Last Poster was gone.

Bad -- I almost always rely on that info to see where a thread's going and whether I should return quickly or not.

Why was it removed? (Sorry, didn't read the whole thread herein.)

*object* (to removal)

Edit: Whoops -- as I refresh the page, the user name in a new "Last Post" column is getting toggled on and off. Not sure what's going on here but I guess Justin et al. are working on it...

The way it is right this second (the name preceding the time of the post within the same column) is pretty ok. The old way seemed cleaner, but this is at least just as functional. Not bad.

The right-justification of the forum column really does make things look more cluttered, however. But, it's not so horrible as to cause huge difficulties.

Anyway to remove the n/a under postlist? I see why it's there - if someone replied to your post it shows their name, but the majority of the posts still show n/a which makes it pretty useless.

Someone elsewhere posted:

"Knowing the last poster was very useful to me to see if amnyone had replied to topics I had last posted to. "

I'm always interested to see what unusual ways people have got used to to find information but this is a puzzle: the page »/postlist shows which topics have been replied to "that you last post to", and the blue arrow shows updates to topics you are reading, so I'm not sure why the last poster info was anything useful?
I find that people sometimes give a relevant answer but do not respond to me directly so I keep an eye out for their post by looking for their name.

Oh, and I just noticed, thank you for adding the last poster info to the last column in all formats, including the threads you posted in view. Yay, thanks!

I vote to DUMP the asterisks, and put the the format back the way it was; including the column for last poster (and, I don't mean that funky, crappy interim first/last poster format that was tried last night, but the original, tried and true version that existed for these past few years). You are messing with perfection here...

I agree.

Justin: When I first read this I was disappointed to see the part about "I'm going to leave it as it is for a while..." until I noticed that "last poster" was, in fact, back! Thanks! The idea of a customizable layout that you mentioned is of course the perfect solution, but it's probably fairly complex to do. Don't really know if it's worth it if most folks are reasonably happy with a standard layout. If I could fully customize it in any way I probably wouldn't change it much from the way it is now.

I agree - put it back the way it was, and then see if you can make it customizable - for that minority that may want to change it.
