to my brain, the asterisk means something, and it's not "get more info on this username".

I've always liked exploring strange new worlds.

You know, to boldly go where no man has gone before?
And this site always delivers!

*I don't mind if the changes are modified a bit (and I can see justin is in the process of doing that right now), but the asterisks ain't half bad, as far as I'm concerned.

There's nothing wrong with the new box, but why not make it pop up when you click on the name, rather than an extraneous asterisk?

It's wierdo, not weirdo. Yes, I know that's not the 'proper' spelling of the similar english language word.

Agreed make it the name, not a asterisk.

Please Don't Take The Asterisks Away

I think the popup that displays information about the poster is a big improvement. Clicking on the name caused a full page reload, complete with time delay and complete change of context, making the whole thing more trouble than it was worth. With the asterisk, you can see the poster's history on this site at a glance.

A possible compromise: maybe hovering the cursor over the user name itself could cause the popup to display, eliminating the need for the asterisk?

Heres my suggestion from the thread i created before this one appeared*. (Yes this asterisk is real, and there is a footnote)
I like the idea of being able to look at the profile without having to go into the post, but the asterisk looks odd imho. As odd as it sounds, i find my eyes jumping to the asterisk at the end of the lines.

What about linking the names? or maybe using some fancy CSS to make the profile show up if you hover over the name?
* BTW to the mods, i appreciate being made to look like a double poster, which you did by approving my post, then closing it with the comment "Lets keep this in one thread". Why not just NOT approve it? Or not approve it and message me. This thread did not exist (was probably in the queue for approval) and if it did, i would not have posted.

Yeah, the asterisk used like that is definitely not a good look.

It's likely that one mod approved it and didn't know there was another topic already on the issue. Another saw that there were 2 topics, and closed one with a link to the other. Stuff happens.
