| [2K3] Windows 2003 license problems.
1. Windows 2003 license problems.
I keep getting the following error on the main controller. Active employees( people still with company) to licenses appears to be good. How ever the license utility is suggesting our organization is over by 20 licenses. Our organization does have users in active directory that are no longer with our organization. Do I need to delete them to correct the license problem.
Thanks

| I assume you are using regular 2003 Server and not Small Business cause that's a different licensing scheme:
The answer you are looking for gets a little complicated.
With 2000/2003/2008 server, you choose whether you want to do your licensing on a 'per server' or a 'per user/device' basis. What makes sense depends on your environment - if you only have one server, it doesn't really make a difference. If you have more than one server or think you may have more than one in the future, it makes sense to purchase 'per user' or 'per device' client access licenses as that gives them rights to access any server.
Deleting users doesn't resolve anything.
You need to figure out what licensing mode you are using and see if you really are out of whack on your licensing. If you are doing the per device or per user method, you are pretty much on the honor system. You can go into the licensing tool and tell it you purchased an additional x number of users and then it will be happy.
To be legal, you need to actually own the proper number of licenses for the number of users you have.
To clear out old users, go into the licensing tool, click on Clients, double click on the users that are gone and choose 'revoke'. That will free up the license count. |
