I am thinking of moving to stand alone fast access, have ???

I tried to do a search on this scenario and could not get any results:

What I am thinking about doing to save costs (2 cell and home phone, and dsl = 220.00 per month)is porting my home phone over to a cell phone with my current cell company, metropcs, who is running a family plan, and i can get 3 lines for 90.00 a month, unlimited talk, long distance, and text, plus tax and fees.
I want to port my home number over to the new cell number and then move my dsl service over to a dry dsl plan.

I want to know what is the best process to do this?
port the number first, get it working then call ATT and have the account moved to a dry circuit, or is there a better way.

I also want to keep my bs.net email addy as well.

If I can pull this off i will take a 220.00 bill and reduce it to about 133.00. A savings of almost 90.00 a month.
times 12 months and that is over 1000.00 a year in savings.

Thanks
Mark

dry dsl is the same as the SAFA plan or dsl service without having to have a telephone pots line associated with it.

I didn't even know AT&T would allow a DSL account without the added phone service.

I have been paying outta the ass for phone service just to have DSL and don't even use the phone service.

How can I make the change, just call customer service?

Is there anyone in this forum who has done this or tried?
What has been your results?

As to those who are asking questions about SAFA, or what I believe they are now calling it, Direct DSL, please do a search on stand alone fast access or direct dsl and read up on it. There are tons of posts on the offering from ATT southeast. There are not any conclusive posts on what I am asking about.

Please keep your posts pertinent to my question. If you have questions about what SAFA or Direct DSL is, again, I direct you to the above paragraph.

Thanks for understanding. I do not want my question to move off in a direction that takes it away from the information I am trying to get addressed.

I have it.

Got the 6mbps with no phone service.

I wasn't using my home phone so it was a waste for me to be paying for it. As soon as they came out with the ability to drop the home phone I did that right away.

Now my monthly bill for DSL service and cell phone is about $130 a month. With the home phone it was costing about $180 a month.

I have stand alone...dry DSL...don't need a land line.
Costs me $5 month above the standard DSL price..but no taxes.

I use third party VOIP and all is well.

Thanks for those updates guys.

I am really wondering if anyone has ported their home number over to a cell or a VOIP and moved to Direct DSL / SAFA and how did they accomplish that feat.

Did they port first then move to SAFA or move to SAFA and then port.

It seems to me that if you port over then when you go to switch to SAFA there is not a tel # for ATT to cancel because it has been handed off to another carrier. The other side of the coin is if you switch to SAFA 1st and then try to port the number is dead and might not be available. SEEMS LIKE A CATCH 22. That is why I am asking here to see if anyone has done this and how did they get it done.

This whole scenario is one that is probably going to have to be negotiated with a customer service rep at AT&T. I think the hardest part will be to get your current AT&T email accounts transfered to the new Direct DSL account.

My suggestion would be to call and place the order for Direct DSL as a new service on a new pair of wires from your current shared POTS/DSL service. You can then ask the CSR if (s)he can transfer your current email accounts to the new service once it is up and running. I was able to arrange for this to happen a few years back when I moved from Nashville to Murfreesboro. In that case, I received a new primary account name for the new service in Murfreesboro, but all my old Nashville email accounts were transferred as secondary accounts (as I recall all the old passwords were reset, and I had to re-enter them on the account maintenance web page).

Once the new Direct DSL service is running and your old line-share DSL service has been terminated, you can then safely start the porting process for your current POTS line to your cell phone service.

My advice:
If you want to keep your email account you should downgrade your account to dialup and change the bill plan to credit card. Once the porting is complete, upgrade the dial plan to Direct DSL.

Since there are so many details in this situation you will experience problems, so your best bet is to talk to a competent CSR that can hand hold the changes.

I just recenctly port my line to VOIP after moving my DSL to a Direct DSL line. I called and ordered the Direct DSL line, but make sure you tell the rep that you already have your equipment or they will send you more and charge you for it since it does not qualify for the rebates. Like FAQFixer said, if you want to keep your current email adresses then you will need to also talk to a Billing Specialist with DSL Support so they can move your existing account over to the new Direct DSL line and shut down the one tied to your phone line. You will have to do these things first in order to allow you POTS number to transfer, if that is even possible, and you need to check with your cell provider to make sure your number can transfer. Keep in mind that you will pay $5 more than the regular DSL prices and that no calls can be made to or from the Direct DSL line. THis will take you some time on the phone with the DSL people, but be patient and explain in detail what you want to do in order.

hey guys... was going thru this topic and saw that u were facing issues getting a dry DSl connection.. AT&T is giving the dry DSL connection however for keeping the same email address and other accounts make sure that u call billing and tell them that u would like to avail the facility for dry DSL however u would like to keep the existing email address. cause eversince AT&T took over Bellsouth there were a lotta changes the new one is migrating to the att.net domain.. many ppl who were disconnected from the internet or moved their service to a new location did face this issue(inspite of them asking for a transfer of service).. hence ensure that this is like a transfer of service to the DRY DSL. and BTW the process of adding the old email address as an additional account is removed and is not is not available any more effective 17th

What they heck land line plane are you on??? Deducting my DSL cost $32/mo 3mbs)... my mothly ATT/So bill is like $20/mo (and a total of about $$55 after taxes and all. You could even cut the land line back to "lifeline service" for even less. (911 access and limited local before per call charged... last I knew 30 calls/mo)

I think dry lines (like cable HSI without TV) run higher)... but you cut that land line to absolute basic... cost is pretty minimal, Just shed all the bells and whistles.
