| I was thinking about updating to this version, but I'm currently still using the 'very' old 3.64_XD5. Would it be recommended to upgrade to an intermediate version first (if so, which one?) or will it be ok to update directly to this latest version, if I properly reset to defaults etc...
I'm also not sure if these latest firmwares are compatible with all Z5 models, since mine is pretty old already (dating back to 2004) and I vaguely remember there being an issue years ago with old model Z70 owners not being able to properly upgrade to some newer firmware (it was flash or memory related I believe), hence I don't know if I can assume that all Z5 models accept this latest firmware.
Thanks in advance for any usefull answers. |

| If you reset to factory defaults and reconfigure, there is no need to install and intermediate version.
The Z5 has always had the same hardware specification. Mine isn't all that recent (cfr. its bootbase) and runs the latest versions of ZyNOS quite happily. Take care,
Stefaan

| reply to stefaanE I am unable to upload the firmware with the following:
"Status:A file system error was detected: disk full! Please reboot device, and try again."
I am currently running ZyWALL_5_UTM_4.04(XD.0)C0. Never had any issues upgrading before. Even after reboot the message returns. -- Lets Kick it... |

| reply to StorminNorm said by StorminNorm :I am unable to upload the firmware with the following: "Status:A file system error was detected: disk full! Please reboot device, and try again." The message says what to do - reboot the Z5 and retry the upload. The 4.04 series uses a lot of RAM, and after a while the available RAM cannot hold the new firmware image. When the router reboots RAM usage returns to about 26MB and the image can be loaded.
You can see the amount of free RAM on the home page. After a reboot, the system uses about 26MB, which in my case went up to 31MB after about 1000 hours uptime. The firmware image is around 3.5MB... you do the math.

Take care, Stefaan I did try rebooting prior to flashing and still received the error. | A while ago I replaced my 11Mb/s wireless card (which would use up to 80% of CPU when transferring big files) with a 54Mb/s Access Point. Hence I never had to upgrade the 4.0x series firmware with a wireless card in the Z5. It well could be that the use of the card reduces the available RAM even further. I don't think that the cables make much of a difference - thankfully some hardware is still devoid of processors and firmware .

Thanks for the reply, I upgraded a while ago, no issues so far. Setting up the dozens of rules took some time, but it was worth it. Some of the new features in the 4.x series are excellent improvements compared to the old 3.64.
The user friendliness of the web-interface has improved too and generally speaking (though it could be totally subjective) it seems as if the speed (throughput/ping times/etc..) has improved too.
I can't help but recommend anybody that's still on the old 3.64 series to upgrade to this latest firmware.
Only thing that's very noticable (in the 'negative' sense) as has already been mentioned, is that the RAM usage has gone up A LOT. On the older 3.64, average RAM usage was 12MB (if I read it correctly), on this new one, it's 27MB (so far). Still as long as it doesn't run out, all's good! ^_^ |

| reply to Beeert Yes, RAM usage went up since 3.64, but that's nothing to be concerned about (at least not now). Flash usage went down little bit.
