Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

Nice find, thanks dude. Hopefully there's other small minor improvements also. I'm coming form 1.03 right now.

Edit: Just tried it out. Seemed to change the MAC address, and therefore the Cable modem couldnt establish a connection. I suggest you don't use this firmware!

I tried reverting my router back to 1.03, but it said it was incompatible. I'm not sure what I'm going to do now! But, don't use this firmware!

It doesn't accept either the old firmwares or anything.

I fixed my connection by simply copying the MAC address into the Network settings. And it seems to work then. But nothing else after that. Kind of disappointed in this. I really hope they can come up with a fix for it, cause this is very very unacceptable. Firmwares that they release should NOT be bricking routers like this.

Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

Since your MAC address changed all you have to do is reset your cable modem. Just unplug your router and cable modem and wait about 1 minute then plug the cable modem back in and wait till it is connected then plug in the router and it should work.

Just so you know every time you change the Mac Address or use a new router you always have to reset the modem. The firmware is most likely fine.

Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

Bud, no..

The MAC address on the ROUTER physically changed. It's a completely invalid MAC address. Therefore, it could not connect.

WAN:
MAC Address : 00:03:64:00:01:23
LAN:
MAC Address : 00:03:64:00:01:24

That's what it said. It did NOT work. Go try it out for yourself.

Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

I can change my address over and over and it connects after I reset my modem. Try putting this MAC Address and see if it works then

Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

Okay, you still aren't getting it...

After upgrading the firmware, it physically changed the MAC address. It's an invalid address, hence why I had to manually change it to what was on the sticker, on the bottom of the router.

It set it to what I had posted up above...

I manually changed it where you can clone the address...in the WAN settings.

Let me know if that finally makes sense to you. And you should try out the firmware also. It might play nicer with PPPoE and FiOS.

Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

The firmware seems stable, and I get less errors via Wireless with my 3945 ABG, however...just that one quirk with the MAC address is very discerning.

I'm glad it finally made sense to you.

It's even worse now that I can't flash back to an older firmware such as 1.02 or 1.03. It gives me an error and says it's incompatible.

I have the same problem as above...and the fact that I can't go back to 1.03 makes it worse...

I ended up turning off my wireless till a fix comes out.

For those of you have connected back, how is the firmware? Is it worth switching from 1.02?

Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

As a previous poster noticed, it changes the WAN and LAN MAC addresses to 00:03:64:00:01:23 and 00:03:64:00:01:24 respectively. This is a bug and problem in several ways, including the fact that Windows (and its different components, including the UPnP IGD functionality for example) and other (especially security/LAN configuration) software see the gateway as an entirely new/different device (and therefore the PC is on a "new network), and reset/reconfigure/configure accordingly (or ask the user to reset/reconfigure/configure anew). This is perhaps the biggest bug in the new firmware, and the most significant reason to not recommend it.

Its UPnP implementation is broken somewhat. Most likely because of the changed MAC Address, Windows' detects the 4500 as a "new" UPnP device, and creates a new connectivity icon in My Network Places (the pre-existing one wont work). Furthermore, the Network Connections UPnP IGD connection icon never appears (a pre-existing one will somewhat work, until the PC is rebooted/network reset), no matter what UPnP settings are used in the configuration.

Additionally, clicking on the Status/Wish Sessions link in the gateway configuration, results in...nothing (with WISH disabled). Nothing happens. I cant recall the behavior of this before, so I can't compare it to previous versions of the firmware (notwithstanding the issue of reverting to prior firmware in this version). However, even if WISH is disabled, it should at least show a page stating that ("WISH is currently disabled" etc). Enabling WISH enables this link/page. I also tested this poor/dumbass design choice (assuming its intentional) by disabling wireless, and, sure enough, both the wireless status page and the wish status page, are inaccessible (nothing happens when you click on their respective links). Really poor design choice/bug.

Also, as a previous poster mentioned, the new firmware doesn't recognize and therefore wont upload older firmware versions. The "super hard reset" firmware upload method (for D-Link gateways in general) probably works, I just haven't had the time (or inclination yet) to test it out (I will soon though).

Finally, I noticed that when i first accessed the gateway configuration pages in IE7 after upgrading to this firmware version, it popped up "warning bar" message about "this site requires MSXML 5.0..." etc etc. Someone at D-Link might want to check the fact that IE7 does not pre-approve MSXML 5.0 as "safe", thus requiring manual user approval, and to therefore use 4.0 or 6.0 instead.

Those are my initial observations in the first day or two, I'll post back with more (if there is more) later..

If the metod you are referring to is loading the router back up with the reset button held it doesn't seem to work with this device. I tried it a few differen't ways with no luck.

Is this an official Firmware or a Beta release? Because I'm suprised that D-link would release a firmware that causes so issues. I absolutely refuse to update, I was tempted last night but after hearing some more, it ain't happening.

I love D-link routers but there firmware's seem to detroy router's, 4100, 4300 and now 4500 as prime examples.

Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

It's hard to really tell if it really is an official firmware release. This is solely because beta firmwares are listed as such. However, on the FTP, it mentions no such thing. Also, it appears on the support site, but again...not on the main page for the firmware for games.dlink.com site.

So, at this point...it's all up in the air.

I'm able to get online with the router, but it's not good at all, that the MAC address is so unbelievably fubar'd.

A good rule of thumb applies here...if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Also, if you notice...they have pulled it from the site, however it still exists on the FTP.

Just stay away from it. I'm hoping they can fix this, otherwise I'm going to be VERY unhappy.

I have also looked on there games.dlink.com and they don't list the firmware yet, which makes me wonder about its state, beta or full release.

You are also right, if it ain't broken don't fix it, because I have all performance I need form 1.02 firmware. I am however one of those people that likes to keep up with firmware updates for all my equipment, but it looks as though I will just wait for a more stable upgrade.

Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

I put the 1.11 Beta firmware on. It seems to work better than 1.10 in that the MAC address is now correct.

On thing I did notice in the logs:
[INFO] Fri Aug 01 20:51:23 2008 Latest firmware version 10.20 is available

I believe DLINK has made another mistake. I'm sure they mean 1.10 instead of 10.20 being available.

mkalamas

@rr.com
I would avoid this firmware. MAC address filtering no longer works for me after upgrading to the 1.10 firmware.

I hope they have a fix soon or someone figures out a way to roll back the firmware.

John_M

@rr.com

I'm glad I'm not the only one having issues with 1.10.

I'm having the following issues:
1. The embedded web server in the router is EXTREMELY slow in both Firefox and IE, while web pages from the Internet (not built into the router) load at a normal speeds.

I've tried another computer, other browsers, turning off pop-up blockers, rebooting the router, completely powering off and disconnecting it, reverting to factory defaults, downgrading the firmware, reinstalling 1.10 from a fresh download, etc... and no luck at clearing this up.
2. I had issues with MAC address filtering but I have not tried it again because of issue #1.
3. I am unable to revert back to 1.02.

I have not checked to see if the MAC address has changed. Perhaps 1.10 was released with generic MAC addresses embedded in the firmware. This could be a mess to resolve for D-Link. It may require users to change their MAC address themselves before/after updating to a fixed firmware.

I contacted D-Link technical support earlier today (7-22-08) via email, but have not heard back yet.

mashean

I received that email this morning that 1.10 was out so I upgraded. My MAC address changed as well but to something different than what you see. I also experience slow webpage load times compared to 1.02 as well as the inability to filter by MAC address. Hopefully they remedy this problem soon.

Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

Well that stinks. I should have found this before upgrading. The 1.10 killed my working psp to ps3 remote play over the internet function. Now my PS3 turns itself on by itself probably because of the mac address issues.

Also before I saw this thread I also emailed D-Link asking how I could go back. I'll be calling here in a few minutes as I'm more mad after reading this thread.

D-Link pulled the firmware from there site. In the D-Link forums they have posted.

We pulled the 1.10 code because of issues reported here and in our internal CRM database. We are working diligently on a correction for those that upgraded and can no longer use MAC filtering or are experiencing other firmware related issues. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

LCD still works fine here.

I originally got a 4500 because my 4300 had a bad flash, and I just found out how to reflash it properly. Works fine now with 1.7 FW. So, now I'm thinking about replacing it permanently until they can get the 4500 working well.

I'm not sure which i want to use at this point, because i'm so very disappointed.

Great News!!! - Conflict between 1.10 FW and Avast! AV

Great news!!! I found this on Avast's website:

»avast.com/eng/avast-4-home_pro-r···ory.html

Version 4.8.1229
July 23, 2008

* Web Shield: solved compatibility problems with Opera browser
* Web Shield: solved problems with some D-Link router devices

I loaded the update and now I can see the embedded web pages just as quickly as before in Firefox 3.0.1.

This doesn't fix the MAC address issue, but it is a step in the right direction.

I hope this helps someone out there.

sameprob

@ontera.net

after much crying and whining with dlink tech support about this issue they offered to RMA my 4500 and send me a new one.

I refused as there should be a fix before it would come back from RMA and that I just wanted some satisfaction. My request was then that whomever let 1.10 be released to the public should get a stern spanking.

they are looking into it

Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

I personally think its a disgrace, they should have had a fix for this in about 2 days. I didn't upgrade, but I do feel for the people that have a great router with terrible software to run it.

moose

@bellsouth.net

DEFINATELY DO NOT upgrade to this excuse of a firmware. I found the issues with it unfortunately the day it was released. After the typical "it must be something you have done", and after numerous comical attempts of the tech trying to walk me through going back to 1.02 (like I didnt try that right off the bat). I was informed they would ship me a new replacement with the 1.02 firmware. Imagine my surprise (or lack there of) when the "new" (refurb)replacement came in with 1.10 loaded on it....especially since they pulled 1.10 from their website. Now I am trying to get one of these damn things shipped back to them...I would much rather keep mine instead of a refurb they sent....Good luck getting through to them as well...

One of the moderators and tech support guys on the official DLink forums mentioned they would have new code for the DGL-4500 as early as this week. So, maybe expect it next week at the earliest.

Yeah, and if they sent you a replacement with 1.10 loaded on, you really need to get it escalated to level 3.

Adding my two bits here...

I have to say I am shocked that D-link would not have found this in its testing before release. Makes me think twice about buying anymore of there products.

In my case I had router set to notify me when a new firmware release was available. So a few days after its release I get messages from the router saying UPDATE ME. I had put over a months worth of settings into it and was starting to enjoy some of the nice tasty bits that make the GamerLounge unique. I was smart enough to save all my settings with the nice built in settings saver. Only issue is that it seems this 1.02 file is not compatible with 1.10 firmware. Good testing DLINK!

My home network is in shambles now. Nothing works. And my life revolves around computers. Feel like I am living it the stone age having to hack and slash my way to my devices.

Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

The router has started failing a bit since I've loaded 1.10 on it. That's pretty bad. I really moved back to the DGL-4300, and I loaded on the 1.8 FW, since I have a lot of wireless clients. And hopefully it'll last me a bit.

The 4500 is failing with some packet loss, and time outs, as well as LAN ports failing. I'm not sure what's up. But, it's just not good at all.

mashean

@edwardjones.com

Anybody know why they would prevent you from rolling back to 1.02? Been a week since my router told me to update and still no fix. No calls/emails back from D-Link either. I really would prefer not to have a refurbished replacement so hopefully they get the update out soon. As everybody has already said, I agree it's insane that this version of firmware passed testing.

Re: DGL-4500 NEW Firmware 1.10 Released

dead ports and slow internet? ya i dont think that the firmware is the problem. I have been using the 1.10 firmware since it came out and aside from the mac address bug (which affects nothing else but having to look at a mac address composed of all numbers), is perfectly fine. Weak wireless signal and packet loss? Might try to reflash it, because this firmware just simply isnt the cause of all your ailments...

mashean

@cox.net
Does sound odd with all the additional ailments being listed. My main problem is the mac issue. I would reconfigure my router and then get to mac filtering. When I tried to add my computer to the list it would just freeze my router.

Moose

@bellsouth.net

What the problem seems to be with the mac address filtering is the deny address works, but not the allow. I tried to be sneaky and add all but one of my computers to the deny list, which actually added computers to the list and then switch from deny to allow, but that didn't work either. It managed to deny ALL of the computers.
Anyways, I hope they get a new firmware out soon...I wonder whose genius idea it was to not allow a roll-back to 1.02....

seems to work ok so far, my mac address filtering is working.

It didn't like my 103 settings backup for some reason. It loaded it but would't pppoe connect to my ISP. I loaded the one I made for 1.11 that I made from 1.10 upgrade and it worked fine.

So using 1.10 setting and putting in my MAC's seems to be fine.

Hopefully no gremlins pop up in this beta.
