iTunes is a mess for Windows. The last few versions now I loose my DVD drive every time I install it. I have to remove the upper and lower filters in the registry to get my DVD drive back and then iTunes complains.

The latest version occasionally locks up when syncing with my iPhone. I would assume an update is coming soon....

Apple iTunes 7.7 installed on two Windows XP Pro SP3 systems here, with no stability issues (performance, as always, could be better... ).

I would try completely removing iTunes + QuickTime and then running a fresh install. Uninstalling doesn't touch your iTunes library .xml files so you shouldn't lose any playlists or things like that.

I'm not sure if this is justified, but I try to always update iTunes by downloading the full installer from Apple's website, rather than using the "Apple Software Update" application that comes bundled with iTunes.

Even though it seems like the autoupdate downloads the complete installation package, for some reason it takes roughly twice as long to install than it does with the standalone installer file. I just don't trust it.

I have XP with SP3 and it also locks up. I deleted and re-installed and continues to lock up on exit.

Works okay here. When you close iTunes it re-writes your iTunes .itl file (as far as I know...) Perhaps they broke something in that area.

Just a shot in the dark, perhaps try making sure that the user account you're using has permissions to the folder the iTunes library is stored in? If it's in its default location in My Documents you shouldn't have any problem, but if you have changed the default location, perhaps iTunes is encountering a permissions issue when it tries to write to one of the files?

I thought I had found a link between NOD32 and iTunes 7.7, but it didn't work.

Going to try the "second-newest version" tomorrow, and wait on the upgrade to the current.

***FIX [Help] itunes 7.7 keeps crashing on exit

I have been having the same issue and think I have solved the problem.

The issue is the Bonjour Service (will show as the mdnsresponder process in task manager). I stopped this service and switched it to manual.

ITunes now shuts down and doesn't lock up. I've tried it on 2 XP PC's and that corrected the problem.

Of course, you may get an warning the first time you launch Itunes about the service being stopped. Just say OK and it will still open - I launched it a few times since then and no longer get the error.

I tested my files, the store and my ipod and everything seems to be working. Please let me know if this works for you.
