4 edits | Shooting For A Cause: Another (cheaper) photobook option
I hate to redo the poll, but another option has just come to my attention. I wanted to see what prices other photobooks were set as, so I browsed through LuLu.com's marketplace. I was surprised to see books with about our number of pages (or more) being sold for much less. (For example, this 67 page book for $22: »www.lulu.com/content/80080 ) Then I noticed that those books were paperback books, not photo books (even though they contained photos).
I contacted LuLu.com's live help and chatted with someone who informed me that the major difference was that the photobook used glossier paper and had premade templates. Since I'm going to be formatting the images for the calendars anyway, I could pre-format the images, print them to PDF, and then upload that PDF to use for the book.
The big advantage to doing a paperback or hardcover book (as opposed to a photobook) is price. The base price for a hardcover photobook is $50.45. (We would need to add the NCMEC donation and LuLu's commission to this). The soft cover photobook's base price is $10 less. The base price of a paperback book is $14.88. The base price of a hard cover book is $18.38.
With the photobooks, I was figuring that we would set the NCMEC donation at $10 which would set the book prices to $62.95 and $52.95 for hardcover and softcover respectfully. With the normal books, we could increase the donation to $15 and still sell the books for $37.13 and $33.63 for the hardcover and softcover respectfully.
So what do you think? Should we go with the book option or the photobook option? Is the glossier paper worth the extra money on the price?
EDIT: Changed the price of a hard cover book based on LuLu's book cost calculator. They have a calculator in the area where you create your book, but it seems a bit funky. (Gives different prices at different times.)

| reply to Jason Levine The price of the non-photobook would me more sales. I think the $62.95 of the photobook would be cost prohibitive for a lot of people especially those not that familiar with our project. However the glossy pages of the photobook would be a nice option. Would it a lot of extra work/money to offer both? -- My Gallery Image quality is not the product of a machine but of the person who directs the machine, and there are no limits to imagination and expression. -Ansel Adams |

Jason Levine Premium join:2001-07-13 USA | According to the live help guy I spoke with, both print with similar quality. The photobook option just gives us glossy paper (and templates) while the book option gives us normal "book quality" paper. |
