I know one of the high end configuration speakers is BOSE but I would prefer something to have high quality speakers like them but not as expensive ($89 for a 2.1 setup, $399 for a full 5.1 setup!) for my aging Creative 5.1 speaker setup.
Are there any other known manufacturers similar in quality to BOSE that also produce computer speakers? |

I realize that there are many Bose haters out there, but my experience with my 901 Series VI speakers (purchased in 1992) has been great. Placement of the 901's and the proper use of the included equalizer is critical. So many people who think they suck have not listened to them when they're placed at an optimal distance from the rear and side walls and/or with a suitable amplifier. Flame away. -- N.Y. Ironic for me that this question came up now.
I bought a set of Boston Acoustics Digital Media Theater surround sound speakers in December 1997. Best sounding speaker reproduction I have ever heard. Of course, they're just plastic, and they were inexpensive, but I love 'em. The sub-woofer started crackling just this past Saturday. Its audio is next to nothing now.
I'm trying to decide what to get to replace mine as well... -- "Sometimes all you can do is just hunker down and take it, like a jackass caught out in a hail storm". LBJ |

| reply to mrchris My "computer speakers" consist of a Sony STR-DE825 reciever (5 channels x 100 watts) that drive a set of Klipsch loudspeakers.
I run two cables between my computer and the Sony: •SPDIF digital audio •Sony Ctrl-A1 bidirectional interface, for which I "homebrewed" the interface for the computer, and wrote a nice control progrem. I can not only control all of the functions the buttons on the Sony's front do, but alse can "see" every indicator that exists on its display -- in a window! It even does a nice job tuning in radio stations!
COST? I see units like my Sony on Craigslist all the time for $75-$100. Speakers.. spend according to taste.
BTW: the controller interface I built, is based on an Atmel microcontroller, and has a total parts cost of around $5.00
