| [Wireless] Linksys Experts help please router Model WRT600N
Ok folks, background info first. I have Comcast 6Mbps/1Mbps
Yesterday I decided to download a 6.3GB file from the Sony PlayStation Network, wirelessly to my PS3. The download speed was horrid... it took 10hours.
After a long thought process at work I came home and did some speed testing on 3 different computers; here's how it was done.
Computer 1: Desktop, Vista, wireless - through router, furthest away. Computer 2: Laptop, XP Pro, wireless - through router, mid-range.
Computer 3: Laptop, Vista, wireless - through router, closest. Computer 3.1: direct connect - through router Computer 3.2: direct connect - through modem
Now then, each of the 5 was tested on 3 speed test sites, 5 times each: 1)Here on DSLreports.com - to Forth Worth, TX 2)Speedtest.net - to Houston, TX 3)Speakeasy.net - to Dallas, TX
For a total of 15 tests a machine, and 75 tests overall.
Now then, for the average Down/Up results of each site for each machine.
Everything listed in this format: DSLreports/Speedtest/Speakeasy and all numbers are kbps
Computer 1: Average Down 1377.2 - 1518.6 - 3262.6 Average Up 914 - 922 - 1011.6
Computer 2: Average Down 1430 - 1911 - 4707 Average Up 968.6 - 947.2 - 1028.4
Computer 3: Average Down 1679 - 1855.6 - 4737.4 Average Up 997.4 - 869.8 - 1028
Computer 3.1: Average Down 1774 - 2033.4 - 5246.2 Average Up 1002.2 - 947.8 - 1030.2
Computer 3.2: Average Down 6030.2 - 5700.8 - 6273 Average Up 1009.8 - 983.8 - 1039.6
Ok... So as you can tell, all my upload speeds are hovering around the right area of 1Mbps. However my router seems to extremely be hampering my download speeds. It was only after I direct connected to my modem that I started getting around the 6Mbps mark.
So I'm asking for help. This is a brand new router, that has dual channel capabilities, and I've having some major trouble configuring it.
Can anyone assist me please? I don't mind if this takes a few days or weeks. I've extremely tech/network savvy, but this new linksys router has me stumped. |

Well, that's some damn fine testing I must say
What wireless cards are you using and what model router and firmware? Any other wireless networks in the area, wireless phones? |

Well, I looked at the numbers a second time and it doesn't look like wireless is at fault. Maybe adjust MTU? |

Odd... the router model was in the original title, but it got chopped off.
Anyways, here it is:Linksys WRT600N 10MB/100MB/1GB router.
This router has the latest firmware from Linksys, and is also a dual channel router. Meaning it can work at 5GHz, 2.4GHz, or both at the same time. Furthermore it is compatible with A/B/G/N hardware.
Of the 3 computers, the two laptops connect with internal wireless cards.
The desktop PC connects with the Linksys WUSB300N USB adapter.
There are 2 other wireless networks in nearby in my neighborhood, but they are very weak weak signals. There are also 2 sprint wireless phones in my house. |

Ok, MTU.... hmmm... so what should the setting be? I want everything to run wirelessly, no direct connects. |

| The wireless speeds drop off as you get further away from the router as to be expected. What I found interesting is how similar the wireless speeds are to wired Computer 3.1 going through the router. If the problem was wireless then 3.1 and 3.2 should be just about identical but they're not. That's why I think wireless isn't at fault.
As for what MTU should be at... I don't know. Someone else will chime in though. |

One question though is. The MTU was set to "AUTO" right out of the box, could the router actually be adjusting it to a lower number based on what it thinks is correct? |

| reply to larue05 For the XP system, bump the RWIN setting. Go big.
For the Vista machines, things are a little more complicated. The following, provided by cacroll has helped several folks. »networking.nitecruzr.net/2007/06···for.html |

| reply to larue05 MTU=1500 for the wired connection, and probably the wireless (though some routers use jumbo frames and other techniques to improve throughput that may work better with different settings) It's not suprising to get lower throughput wirelessly nor that it varies inversely to the distance, especailly with weak but known interfering WLAN's and maybe phone. encryption of any type adds additonal overhead. 3.1 is telling you something about that router, can you test that again with the wireless shut off (should be somewhere in the router config to disable WLAN) |

| reply to larue05 Ok people. Thanks for all the positive responses so far, always has been a reason why I like this community.
I'll try these suggestions later tonight, and give some more updates.
I'm even going to start out by doing a hardrest of the router as well and see what speeds I get. |

| Ok, this is officially driving me nuts.
I've tried all the setting people have mentioned.
Then I even reset the router to factory defaults, and disabled the routers wireless signals.
It's still acting weird. I then did the exact same setup two different times for Computer 2 and then 3
Computer 2 XP -> router -> modem ->outside world = 4Mbps Computer 2 XP -> modem -> outside wordl = 6.2Mbps
Computer 3 Vista -> router -> modem ->outside world = 5Mbps Computer 3 Vista -> modem -> outside world = 6.3Mpbs
Now then, on all of those 4 tests I did a 10MB download. On both machines if I went through the router(with default settings) I was only getting 750kbps.
WTF is going on? I'm calling Linksys, cause their product shouldn't be causing this much drop in speed with a straight through connection.
I'm highly upset at the moment... I hate getting on the phone with them. |

| reply to larue05 When I first read your post I had myself wondering what could be wrong with the router, but then I took a deeper look and noticed that you weren't even getting powerboost when connected to the modem directly. I always test in the the 20-25Mb range with speakeasy when using the same server.
I know that your router is still slowing things down, but what about your connection as a whole? Are your signal levels good? Do you normally get Powerboost?
After I got that out of my head I remembered a thread about VoIP and how people's routers were limiting their throughput because of QoS (Quality of Service) settings. Does that router have any Qos settings? Do you have the best firmware for your router? (I say best because the newest isn't always the best )
What about the bands (A,B,G,N). What do you have your router set to broadcast? Did you have a Wireless router before this one? If so, were these problems evident at all with that one?
Okay, that is all I can think of for now. Don't bother answering all of the questions, just look over a couple of them to see if they are relevant. Good luck! |

| reply to larue05 Another silly thought, is your wireless secured ? is your connection "working" when none of the machines should be doing anything ? i.e. idle desktop but the activity light on the router is still blinking. Just thinking something could be sapping your BW. |

| reply to larue05 Maybe its a linksys firmware bug.
I am using a wrt600n v1.1 with dd-wrt firmware and have a cablevision boost 30/5 cable connection and get full speeds with my inten 802.11n card
Have you tried using dd-wrt firmware on it?
Are you using any security on the wireless connection? |

| I just got one of these yesterday and have not set it up yet. But, I did get into the setup GUI to verify firmware version-oddly enough the latest version on the Linksys support site is 1.01.36 build 3 and mine is 1.01.36 build 4.
But, more to the point, did I see Intrusion Protection Security IPS option on that router? If so, turn it off, I have it on my RVS4000 and it definitely degrades speeds.
