"Did you hear about the new iPhone with 3G?"
A lot of the everyday consumers don't even realize what 3G means. Verizon has had 3G spec CDMA's EVDO for years. EVDO 3x RevB is only slightly slower than the iPhone's HSDPA, and EVDO 4x is even faster. I could be wrong with the speeds here, and I'm not sure what revisions Verizon's phones are currently using. But I don't think saying a phone HAS 3G is a very proper way of saying it (considering 3G is referring to the council, or generation itself). And I also think it's not much of a big deal, but rather Apple finally getting their hardware up to date.
In terms of service COVERAGE, GSM is an inferior technology to CDMA. Period. CDMA can reach more people. Waves can travel further and infiltrate buildings better. Scientific fact.
GSM may have some other advantages (like possibly better voice quality) but there is no question of what system has better coverage. Whether or not there are people saying they have AT&T iPhone's with "service everywhere". |

| Whatever the specs may be, doesn't matter when you see that "No service" message when you fire up your phone in London/Paris/ any of the numerous other countries of the world. CDMA might be superior tech-wise, but when it comes to global coverage and roaming capabilities, GSM wins hands down. |
