| We're richer than we think... we just spend on trivial items
(and we don't pool our money)
i pay about $100 every month for my cell phone service.
as i look around i see that most folks across a very broad range of income levelss have cell phones.
this article (from a year ago!) says that 82% of americans, 250 million people, use cell phones.
250 million * $100/ month = $ 25 BILLION dollars a month.
$25 Billion a month!!
that is a staggering sum of money. and it would surely pay for state-of-the-art rail systems.
if we also trade our starbuck's coffee along with our cellphones, we could have the trickest system ever conceived! (FREE coffee would easily be covered!)
trade cable tv, and we could have a fleet of fuel cell powered hover craft to take us back and forth to the grocery and office!! |

| Good point. Then again there are people like me. I spend $42 for cell service but have no home phone. If I had a home phone it would cost me $54. Keep in mind this is after taxes so it is a savings of $12. Granted I could save more by dropping a $15 internet plan on the cell phone making it $27. Point is not all of that 82% with cell phones is a luxery. -- Bowling: It's cleaner than baseball. |

| reply to hermitage damn, i've got a blackberry with a data plan and lots of minutes. it's always in the mid 90's after taxes.
anyway, the point is that if everyone who kicked in some $$, we'd be awash in cash for good projects.
$60/month * 12 months * 10years * 256 million subscribers = $1,843,200,000,000.00
$1.84 TRILLION DOLLARS
most of that spent on "dude where are you" / " hahah lol " text messages.
we could build something great with that money. |

| That is assuming most users go with the expensive plans.
My cell bit is $29/mo; about $34 after taxes and fees.
My folks have one that is even less -- Scott Henion
