Based on 3DMark06 they are roughly equal. Will have to wait for a review based on game benchmarks.
Is that 3DMark a pretty good representation of how they will perform? According to that the 9700m GTS has a slight edge over the 8800m GTS.

Louisville, CO		 I think to take anymore from it than they are close in performance would be speculating. The 9700mGTS has a couple of things going for it like PureVideo.
