| Using a router with U-verse.
So I'm scheduled to be hooked up tomorrow, and my house is already hardwired, so I'd like to continue using my router/switch if possible. For one thing I like the NAT and firewall. Can do?
Currently my router does the PPPoE for DSL. What does the fiber require to connect, if anything? Anyone else done something similar?
Also how much control will I have over the wireless feature? Will I be able to enforce security, restrict to known MACs, etc.? |

2 edits | You will have to have AT&T's RG (residential gateway) set up and then your router behind it to keep your existing router in place. Since your router will get an IP from AT&T's RG, it would just be straight DHCP. The RG actually gets it's IP using DHCP as well instead of PPPoE.
There is MAC filtering and encryption as well as a few other options for the AP. One thing to note though. If you have your router set up behind the RG but have devices connected to the RG's AP, they will not be able to communicate with any devices behind your other router.
You will want to have the STBs plugged directly into the RG if you will be using Cat5 for them. Otherwise the multicast video streams will end up on all of your other devices since your existing router most likely doesn't know what to do with IGMPv3 messages. |

| reply to Wily_One I had these same concerns but the RG has terrific NAT/firewall features. Probably the best I've seen with the exception of the replacement WRT54G firmwares.
There is no PPPoE and currently the DHCP implementation pulls a "sticky" IP. You retain the same IP even when you reset the RG.
But if you do want to run a router behind it, the darn thing is smart enough to configure this for you! Just plug the router in and try to browse a page. You'll get a message that a router-behind-router was detected, and the RG asks if you'd like it to configure it for you!
I was just trying to troubleshoot something when I had indeed created that configuration; I was stunned when I saw that!
