 | DWA-140 Does not connect for long Hi! I have vista home premium SP1. I've downloaded and installed the latest drivers (1.30 I thinnk) for DWA-140 from the internet but the following problem occurs:
When I connect to the wireless router I get full connectivity and internet access. But after a while... usually when I'm using the wireless adapter for surfing or gaming... the connection drops and the wireless icon in the bottom right shows limited connectivity. Why does this happen? I connected with my laptops built in wireless G adapter and it connects fine and stays connected for as long as I want.
Please tell me whats wrong. My router is a LinkSys WAG160N Gateway. Its got a Wireless N router. Also it's WPA secured.
Waiting for your reply... |

 | same issue here.... everything is working fine and then just nothing it disconnects... I have to pull the adapter and plug it back in to get it to work.... I have checked power management and made sure to set the adapter and usb root hubs to not turn off.... but it still does it... very very annoying... |

 | Try use static IP address in your Windows Vista computer and turn off all firewalls. |
|
 | reply to Molten Ice I tried the static IP. Just as before it connected for some time but after the internet was used for browsing etc. it got disconnected.
Im getting a 2-3 out of 5 connection to the wireless router. Furthermore I also brought the laptop and the adapter next to the router to get full 5/5 connectivity. The problem still occured.
Any further help appreciated. Thanks! |

 | Did you update the firmware on the Linksys?
And, are you using any kind of encryption at all? WPA/WPA2? WEP?
Let us know, cause that's a big factor in connectivity. |
|
 | reply to Molten Ice Yes I've updated my router. And the updated version works fine with my laptop's built in Wireless G (and weirdly the Wireless G gives stronger signal to the router than the N adapter even though the router is also wireless N!)
Also, I'm using WPA2.
Hope this helps... I really dont want the adapter to be a waste of money |

 | Try use the utility of the adapter... |
|
 | reply to Molten Ice If you mean the software that comes with the CD (the D-Link one) i used that. I used it to connect and also saved the connection of the router on it. I always connect through it. I also once tried connecting via the built in Vista Wireless Utility...
I've emailed the D-link people twice and they dont reply
Please you guys are my only hope! Thanks! |

 | reply to Molten Ice Have you tried to use the latest Ralink drivers (RT-2870) than you can download from here.
There is a July 7 2008 version of the drivers for both XP and Vista. The version numbers on the download page are not correct. Vista driver inside the download package is 2.2
Works great for me where on my DWA-140 and DIR-655. |
|
 | reply to Molten Ice Sorry, but this may sound stupid... what is Ralink?
and I'm not sure which one to download...
Sorry I'm new to this... I was talking about a D-link adapter... never heard of Ralink... I may be talking jibberish sorry...
Please tell me what to download if you think it will help my D-link adapter |

 | reply to Molten Ice D-Link actually is not manufacturing any chipset themselves for their USB products. They buy the chipsets from chipset manufacturers like Ralink and wraps it with a nice little platic box. This is what they did for the DWA-140 and several other products.
Most chipset manufacturers like Ralink actually is responsible for the drivers for several operating systems such as XP, Vista and Linux. This is the case with Ralink.
If you look into the DWA-140 you will see that it has the Ralink RT2870 under the hood.
D-Link releases new D-Link branded drivers from time to time, usually once a year. They grab the latest drivers from Ralink and package them into a D-link branded driver like the 1.30 version that you have already installed.
But you are not using the latest driver for the chipset of your product.
So you might want to go to the link I posted and download the "USB (RT2870/RT2770)" drivers. Just click on the "USB (RT2870/RT2770)" text and you will begin to download a file named "http://www.ralinktech.com.tw/data/drivers/IS_AP_STA_RT2870_D-1.2.0.0_VA-2.2.0.0_RU-2.1.5.0_VA-2.1.5.0_AU_2.0.5.0_VA-2.0.5.0_061708_1.0.2.0_NH.exe"
That the latest drivers for your DWA-140. |

 | reply to Molten Ice thanks for that explanation... that really made things clear ^^
I downloaded it and it works and this time longer... but I have this weird problem... if I put my computer to sleep or maybe after a while the wireless loses its internet connectivity and becomes 'local only' rather than 'local and internet'.
Why is this happening? I installed the latest ra-link drivers. Maybe I have to run the D-link utility as well? Won't that be annoying? having 3 programs (ra-link,d-link and built in wireless utilities) just for connecting to internet?
Please tell me what programs I need to run from the above 3... thanks! |
|
 | reply to Molten Ice The Ralink drivers should be enough. I never use any of the official D-link packages as they tend to be backlevel most of the time.
If you have a look at the Adapter properties of the DIR-140, please make sure that you have Power Save Mode = CAM-Constantly Awake |

 | reply to Molten Ice dk90103, you're the man! Your ra-link was the key. The reason why it still DC'd was because the adapter was still using the d-link drivers... I uninstalled D-link... updated drivers manually to ralink and DING! It was fixed
Thanks a lot pal! You saved me a lot of trouble, time and money!
I'll re-post if I get anymore problems but it doesnt seem that way. Take care!
And thanks to the rest who tried to help! |

 | reply to Molten Ice yes this also helped me... Thank you very much for your insight. all is well 24 hours later... |

 | reply to Molten Ice Found this thread after having the same problem. Ralink driver works great. No more problems. Thanks! |
