[Split] How can I use ASA firewall - c0ldshadow

i recently had FIOS installed at my home for TV and Internet.

my goal is to use my ASA 5505 firewall and completely disregard the action tech. my current setup has both a coax and ethernet cable going to the action tech.

what do i need to do to accomplish this?

You can use your own router as your primary router by switching to a ethernet WAN connection to the ONT.
You will still need the Actiontec (or a MOCA bridge) for VOD and guide data.

thanks for your help, more fiber.

what exactly do you mean by switching to a ethernet WAN connection to the ONT? will this mean verizon will need to come back and get rid of the coax connection and install something new? or will it be as simple as connecting the cat5 cable to my ASA and leaving the coax disconnected

what exactly is the purpose of having both the coax and cat5 going to the actiontech?

The ONT can provide your WAN connection over either coax or cat5. The Actiontec also supports a MOCA LAN to the STBs for VOD and guide data (over the same coax connection).

Normal VZ installation is a coax only install. This eliminates the need to run both cat5 and coax to the Actiontec (cheaper, faster). If the installer ran cat5 to the ONT, then you must have requested a cat5 and he accommodated you.
(sorry I missed that you had both in your first post)

First, verify that you really are on cat5 to the ONT:

Log in to the Actiontec, click on My Network icon, click on Connections menu item, then see what Broadband Connection is connected. That's your data source.
If so, then you don't need the first link. Simply follow the second link (part3). If the Actiontec shows your broadband connection is coax, then start with part 1 of the FAQ.

Note: The diagram shows a LAN-to-LAN connection between the two routers. Part 3 of the FAQ utilizes a LAN-to-WAN, while part 4 is a LAN-to-LAN configuration.

Looks like I really am on CAT5 to the ONT.

I have made some progress. The CAT5 from the ONT goes into my ASA 5505 on e0/0 (outside). The inside IP for my ASA is 192.168.1.91 and the ASA gives out DHCP in the range of 192.168.1.20-192.168.1.30.

I have a straight through cable from the ASA to a regular port (non-WAN) on the actiontec router. I couldn't get anything to work using the WAN port.

Users connecting to the actiontec via wireless, or computers directly connected to the back of the actiontec, can all access the Internet. However, video on demand doesn't work with an error code of VOD_6.

My actiontec router has the following lights off:

WAN Coax
WAN Ethernet
Internet

So at this point to summarize, everything works except the video on demand.

I would suggest starting with the LAN-to-WAN connection first. It is easier to get VOD, guide data, and widgets working. The instructions are in Part 3 of the FAQ:

Some things to check specific to LAN-to-WAN:
•Do a hard reset of the Actiontec to factory defaults to get rid of any settings that might have been changed.
•The Actiontec and Cisco have to be on different subnets. The FAQ suggests putting your router on subnet 192.168.0.x and leaving the Actiontec and STBs on 192.168.1.x.
•LAN side DHCP need to be enabled in the Actiontec so the STBs can obtain an IP address.
•The Actiontec WAN IP address needs to be be set for "Obtain address automatically". It will pull an IP address from the Cisco (192.168.0.x).
•Disconnect/reconnect the A/C to reboot the STBs to make sure they pull a new IP address (cycling the power button is not sufficient).


Once you have the LAN-to-WAN configuration working, you can switch to LAN-to-LAN, if you want. Using a LAN-to-LAN connection makes the Actiontec into a switch and MOCA bridge. Follow the instructions in Part 4 of the FAQ:

Change the subnet for inside NAT on the ASA to 192.168.10.x. Leave the actiontec as is. Should be all you need to do.
