| [Wireless] WRT54GL random Wi-Fi lock-ups
I have a WRT54GL v1.1, initially shipped with the 4.30.7 firmware. I use it as a Wi-Fi access point with WPA authentication, and it also connects me to the Internet with a static IP address. In my WLAN, I have two PCs with TRENDnet TEW-443PI wireless adapters.
From time to time, the WRT54GL will stop working as a Wi-Fi access point for a short time (several seconds to 20 minutes). During such a lock-up, no wireless signal is received on the PCs. The device then arbitrarily returns to normal operation. The lock-ups seem to be random, I cannot relate them to any activity on my PCs. They occur about once in 2-3 days, but this varies.
The problem has been present ever since I purchased this device in May. Today I have successfully upgraded the firmware to version 4.30.12, and then reset and re-configured the device, but have just experienced another lock-up. I have also tried removing power from the WRT54GL during a lock-up for several seconds, then putting it back, but this does not change anything. I have tried both the “Mixed” and the “G-Only” wireless modes, and the problem exists in both, though I haven’t yet had the opportunity to try 802.11b devices in my WLAN.
Please help me get rid of the lock-ups. |

| It could be overheating. Is it sitting in sunlight, are the vents covered, etc.? One option would be to try a third party firmware. It's easy to go back to the Linksys firmware if they don't fix the problem.

| reply to vfaronov I had similar issues with my WRT160N router, and it was easily solved simply by changing channels. Not saying that this will be your case, but if you have not tried changing channels, you should give it a try. -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? |

One option would be to try a third party firmware. I’ve thought about it, but I’ve heard that the original firmware is generally the most reliable one, and since it has all the features I want, changing it would be a last option for me. I’ll try it though if nothing else helps.

| reply to vfaronov I had this problem at a small office that had the WRT54GL. Simply put, it would lock up for just enough time to disconnect applications that were running (AIM, trading programs, etc)
It was resolved by moving over to DD-WRT firmware instead of Linksys firmware. -- CheckSite.us | YourIP.US |
