jimkyle : DirecTV makes a direct connection to your phone line, and this can seriously affect your DSL signal. I'm fortunately close enough to the RT that I'm not bothered by it, but you may need to add a filter to the DirecTV connection to keep it from swamping out the DSL signal.

If your DirecTV was installed by one of their people, it's making a direct connection at the NID (the gray box that separates your house wiring from the AT&T drop line), and you'll have to open up that connection and insert the filter. If you're not comfortable dealing with the wiring, you may need to have AT&T install a "home run" for your DSL to eliminate the need for any filters elsewhere -- but they'll charge you for it...

Incidentally, the same is true for burglar alarm systems. Neither my ADT nor my DirecTV connections are hurting my DSL signal, but I'm only some 900 feet from the RT that serves me so I have very good signal strength. Most installations are not so lucky.
--
Jim Kyle
