|  Problem - Avast! Home Edition 4.8.1227
Updated my XP SP2 to V4.8.1227 via the internal updater and all appeared to be working as expected. After the update Avast requested a reboot and from that time forward my computer became inoperable. Booted into Safe Mode, used System Restore to an earlier date and all appeared well. Avast again asked for a system reboot and once again computer froze. In the end I uninstalled Avast using the uninstaller found at their website and my computer is functioning normally once again. But I'm without an AV program. Avast had been working very well for months and was fully compatible with my FW (Online Armor). Any advice or insight would be much appreciated. |

Vancouver BC | Perhaps I should do a full re-install of V4.8.1227 (after doing a TI image first)? Hate to give up on Online Armor--just started using it after the recent ZoneAlarm/Windows update fiasco. Advice? |

One of the new changes apparently doesn't play well with your machine configuration.
Or you could post in the Avast forums about it, and see what advice is offered there. |

OA has been working just fine and I don't really know if it's the problem. Event viewer indicated that Windows Defender wasn't happy. Spent half my Sunday on this so far.

I looked at the changelog, and while improvements are always nice, I saw nothing earth-shaking there that would make me believe I had to have this latest version installed come hell or high water. |

Just updated both my rigs to .1227, no probs as yet but I'm using Comodo FW. Will let you all know if a problem arises.

Sorry. I was away on vacation.
I am using Kerio PF 2.1.5 with my own rule set.
But I just updated Avast again and it seems that they updated again. Looks like new version is 1229. Does that help? Maybe they fixed it. |

I ended up uninstalling Avast, uninstalling ProcessGuard, uninstalling Online Armor, cleaning out the traces of them in the registry, reinstalling Avast 4.8.1227, reinstalling OA. I can't tell you what the problem was, only that that fixed it (after trying several lesser solutions that did not).

| Thanks for your comments fatness --v.1201 continues to work just fine and I'm receiving daily datafile updates. I'll probably do a full install of the new v.1229 rather than using the internal updater--I suspect that may have been the problem. I was also advised at the OA forum to put the firewall into "learning mode" when I next install a program update for Avast.
